Dave did turn up in a suit holding a bottle of whiskey Freddie was pretty sure he couldn't afford. Still he looked so happy when Leo took the bottle and said thanks that it didn't seem right to question him. While Leo got them a couple of beers, Freddie pulled Dave close.
"Be cool dude," he said.
Dave nodded.
"I mean it," Freddie said. "That's not Leo Lee the football star, that's my mate Leo. Got it?"
Dave gave Freddie a calculating look, "you want me to treat him like he's the guy you've been going on about for months?"
"Exactly!" Freddie exclaimed slapping him on the back as Leo returned handing Dave a beer.
"So Leo," Dave said leaning forward. "You into Freddie or what?"
Leo choked on the sip of beer he'd just taken and Freddie gave Dave a clap across the ear.
"What?" Dave asked. "I'm just doing what you told me."
"I didn't ask," he started before sighing with defeat. "Alright alright tease me all you want I guess it's better than addressing him as sir."
Leo still looked a little flustered, but Dave was easy going and he quickly shifted the conversation to the girl he'd been hooking up with.
"Where's Sadie?" Freddie asked Leo trying to shift the conversation away from the birthmark in Dave's girl's left breast.
"Visiting our parents," Leo replied.
A record scratched in Freddie's mind, "wait what did you say 'our' parents?"
"Sadie's my sister," Leo revealed like it wasn't a big deal.
"What the hell dude I didn't know that?"
Dave who'd been studying Leo since the relegation suddenly spoke, "no offense mate but you don't look like your related."
"Step sister," Leo clarified.
Dave nodded like it made sense but Freddie was still reeling.
"How did I not know this?" Freddie asked.
Leo shrugged and Dave gave Freddie a condescending pat on the head.
"Don't strain yourself come on let's get you another beer," Dave said.
Nikki and Tim were late because Nikki had just caught the guy she'd been seeing kissing another girl. She marched in grabbed the bottle of whiskey Dave brought cracked it open and took a swig.
"Men suck," she said looking around at the room full of men staring back at her.
"Sorry?" Freddie said awkwardly.
"They do," Tim agreed throwing his arm around Nikki's shoulder looking across at Dave, Freddie and Leo. "But they're damn nice to look at."
Nikki took another swig, "true."
"If you're gonna keep undressing me with your eyes I'm gonna need some of that," Dave said grabbing the bottle off Nikki.
The evening descended quickly after that, as they passed the whiskey around and washed it down with beer. Soon they were sitting around the table recounting their worst romantic experiences.
