Freddie never got to go on a 'real' date with Tamara Clement. Officially, they were a couple. They sat together at lunch, and held hands as they walked between classes, everyone talked about them being together. But Freddie spent his weekends and nights at the hospital or helping at home. They texted occasionally and on one memorable evening Tamara sent him some pictures with a clear view of what had been teased through her shirt that day in PE. But that was as far as it went.
After about a month Freddie felt so bad about the cancelled plans and missed calls that he ended things. She didn't cry but did call him an asshole and Freddie decided he shouldn't ask any girls out until his dad got better.
His dad didn't get better.
And just because he stopped asking girls out that didn't stop them from asking him out. Freddie found an assertive girl very attractive, so every time one of them demanded some of his time he caved and the whole process repeated itself.
He did go on a couple of real dates, and he kissed a few girls. He wanted to kiss them more but when it got to the point where he needed to explain the whole situation for the relationship to continue it never seemed worth it. He almost told Allyson Kim, he liked her a lot, but her family moved away and Freddie wasn't moved to honesty by anyone else.
In fact the only people who knew about his dad at school, apart from some nosy teachers, were his best mate Dave Moore and Lydia Nguyen.
