Texting with Leo started slowly and happened naturally. Freddie arrived home from the night his car battery died to a message from Leo that read: are you home. There was no question mark, which made it read perfectly against the image of Leo's bored face. Freddie smiled at the thought as he replied.
Are you coming today? Leo texted on Friday morning.
Freddie knew what he was talking about but again he smiled at Leo's abrupt tone, even via text message. He felt bad saying no, but he had to drop his sister off at pre school that morning and he had another pub night planned for the evening. He invited Leo along but he replied with one word "can't."
At the pub that night Freddie asked Tim and Nikki what they thought about Leo.
"Who?" Tim asked.
"Some hot guy Freddie works out with," Nikki replied heavy with insinuation.
"You're working out with hot guys and you didn't invite me. Rude," Tim exclaimed.
"Gutter minds both of you," Freddie said.
"What?" Tim said. "I wasn't imagining you sweating and grunting and washing each other's backs in the shower, I would never."
"I'm taking that image to bed with me," Nikki added.
"Dicks," Freddie said.
"Yes that's part of the fantasy," Nikki said laughing.
"Now I'm really glad he didn't come," Freddie said.
"You invited a stranger to pub night without approval?" Nikki exclaimed dramatically.
"How could you?" Tim added.
"He said no so it doesn't count," Freddie said.
"Rules are we must vote," Tim said.
"We always vote yes," Freddie said.
It was true, every time they'd voted to allow a stranger on their pub nights it was always an unanimous yes. Whether it was Freddie's mate Dave, or one of Nikki's Tinder dates, they always said yes, even if sometimes they should have said no.
"You keep telling me how weird this guys is," Nikki said. "Is he too weird for us?"
"Nikki the last guy you brought pulled out a packet of sliced cheese and ate it at the table," Freddie said.
"He didn't even share," Tim added.
"Whatever I'm still not sure about this guy," Nikki said.
"But he's hot right?" Tim asked.
"Steaming," Freddie replied.
"Then I vote with Freddie," Tim said.
"Traitor," Nikki said throwing a napkin at Tim.
They laughed together, and spent the rest of the night listing all the things they considered dealbreakers when it came to pub night invites. Top of the list was cheese slices, but it quickly devolved into tiny pet peeves like favourite Marvel character.
At around the sixth round, soon before they all slipped onto the dance floor, Freddie texted Leo again.
Cheese slices? He wrote.
Lactose intolerant, Leo replied the next morning.
He took a screenshot and sent it to his group chat with Tim and Nikki. Leo was given pre approval for any pub night after that.
