IV. A Tragic Fate

I stood up to walk towards the workstations Dr. Jung had just pointed to us.

"They're not looking, you don't have to pretend like you're already working..." He laughed, annoyingly, while following me to the lounge where a few other people from the Lab where doing their research.
I scoffed and didn't even respond. I was busy clicking on the smart wall to turn it on.

"So you're not even gonna speak to me? You know we have to spend three months together, right?" He insisted on talking to me and I didn't understand why, since it had always been clear that he wasn't my biggest fan, to put it nicely. And the feeling was reciprocated for sure.
"We should work, not talk..." I specified, while typing on the interactive desk to start my researches.
"Okay okay... Message received... I'll shut up..."

Luckily enough for me, he actually stopped talking and it went on like that until lunch time, when our mentors came to our rescue after a long morning of researching.
"Guys, what are you still doing there? It's lunch time!" Dr. Jung's voice suddenly echoed in the room, making me slightly jump for the scare.
"Come on! We'll take you where we usually eat, it's the best!" He continued.
So we stood up, turned off the smart wall and rapidly put our things into our bags, ready to follow an ecstatic Dr. Jung and a forever apathetic Dr. Min.

On the other side of the road from where I entered the building that same morning, there was a wooden door. Dr. Kim, Dr. Jung and Dr. Min with other scientists, whom we had only caught a glimpse of during the tour of the lab, entered the door and we followed. I was still a bit disoriented, but everyone made us feel so welcome that I didn't feel out of place anymore, or at least I was starting not to.

"This is like a school cafeteria, so you should be familiar with how it works... You just choose what you want to eat, you put it in the tray and it will calculate the amount you have to pay... Then you can pay either now or before leaving with your preferred payment method... You could also bring your own lunch if you prefer, some of us do that... It's fine, you can still eat it here..." Dr. Min explained to us clearly the whole lunch situation and I was really grateful, because Dr. Jung was too excited about lunch to explain it to us. But I forgave him, it happens to me too sometimes.
We nodded to Dr. Min and thanked him before going to chose our dishes.

I was really hungry, so I ate really fast and unfortunately Jungkook was sitting next to me, so he HAD to make a sarcastic remark.
"Careful, you're gonna choke, Moon!"
I looked at him annoyed.
"What? I'm not allowed to talk to you even when we're not working?" He asked as if he really cared about talking to me, when he clearly just wanted to use every occasion to tease me.
"Not if you're going to annoy the hell out of me as you like to do... I thought we had left that in the past..."
"Oh yes... Those were the days..." He sighed, with a nostalgic look and I just wanted to face palm.
"It's sad that universities are so crowded, we rarely met each other in the last three years and I couldn't make fun of you as much as I would've liked to..." He added.
"Oh, yeah, really unfortunate..." I said sarcastically.

"So, guys... You seem to be close... Did you know each other before this experience?" Luckily for me, Dr. Kim interrupted our conversation, but unfortunately the topic was still the same.
"Yes, sir, we've known each other since elementary school and we've been classmates ever since..." Jungkook explained politely. It was funny how he would change his attitude in a split second, as soon as he wasn't talking to me anymore.
"Oh wow, so you've always attended the same schools?" Dr. Jung asked.
"Yes, sir..." I answered, sounding not too happy about it, which I hoped would go unnoticed to everyone except Jungkook.
"And now even the same major in the same university? And the same lab for your internship? That's destiny!" Dr. Jung exclaimed.
"Or a tragic fate..." I whispered.
"What?" He asked, but I pretended I hadn't said anything.

"So how are you doing so far? Have you been having difficulties understanding the information you found on the topics of your projects?" Dr. Min asked and we started to talk about what we had found and that's how the first lunch of my internship went.

When everyone was done, we paid for the lunch and finally we headed back to the building, ready to go back to work.
Right before entering the building, a girl approached us.
"Bunny!"
She scared the hell out of me. At first I thought she was crazy, but then I saw her passing by me and heading in Jeon's direction.
"Lia, the hell?!" He looked shocked and definitely not pleased, while I was laughing at the pet name she had used. I also started wondering about who she could be, because I had never seen her with him before. Not that I spy on him or anything, but usually those who are 'lucky' enough to be his girlfriends, go around saying it to everyone.

Jungkook had taken her to talk a few steps away from us and the rest of the group didn't seem to notice what had just happened, so they kept on talking amongst themselves and entered the building and I did the same, even though I would have gladly stayed to learn some gossip about Jeon. Not that I cared, I just wanted something to tease him about and get my revenge, but that wasn't the right time.
So I went back to the workstation where I was researching before lunch break and turned the smart wall back on.

"Oh, Luna, you're already back to work! You're amazing! Where is Jungkook?" Dr. Jung approached me.
"Uhmm... He... went to the bathroom... I think..." I don't know why I covered for him, just the good side of me taking over, I guess.
"That's okay... I just wanted to tell you guys that for today and also tomorrow, you can keep researching a bit more and once you've got all the info, we'll start with the practice... Ah and remember to study well this technology!" He said, getting closer to me and typing something on the interactive desk.
"You'll both need to know everything about it, so make sure you also tell Jungkook, okay?" He smiled, as if he had asked me to do the easiest thing ever. And it wasn't. I don't mean the technology, I mean interacting with Jungkook.
"Yeah, sure... Thank you!" I smiled back, then he said bye and left.

It was just the first day and I was already forced to talk to Jungkook more than I would have liked to or been able to tolerate, but apart from that, life was great.
