Once the lights were off, that caught the attention of everyone inside the auditorium. Making sure the lights were completely off, Nicole gave Max a thumbs up, signaling that they were good to go. Max puts on his shades- not only to shield his eyes from the brightness of the backstage light Nicole had turned on but to also cover up part of his face- and passed on the message to PJ and Bobby by giving them a thumbs up of his own, which they returned in understanding.
At the control panel, Bobby excitedly presses one of the buttons and music begins to play from the speakers. Hearing her cue, Nicole flips the switch for the video projection screen to pull up from the stage. Once the whole screen is on display, Max appears on screen, posing in front of an animated atom. Noticing Mazur looking up at the gigantic screen, Bobby and Nicole looked each other with smirks.
"Bobby, would you mind doing the honors?" Nicole asked playfully while gesturing to a lever.
"Don't mind at all, M'lady."
"Wha...Hey! I'm not going to- AAH!!" Using both hands, Bobby pulled the lever, which opened up a trap door that was placed under the podium. The podium itself and Principal Mazur both fell down into the trap door. Once the door closed, Max started to dance and lip sync along with the song "Stand Out".
Some people settle for the typical thing
Livin' all their lives waitin' in the wings
It ain't a question of if, just a matter of time
Before I move to the front of the line
Bobby and Nicole looked out over the audience, only to see everyone cheering and clapping wildly. They've succeeded!
And once you're watching every move that I make
Ya gotta believe that I got what it takes!
Keeping his eyes solely on PJ's camera, Max trips over a piece of cable, which causes him to trip and break through the big screen. He ends up on the other side of the screen, where he can see everyone, and the whole school started to cheer louder than before.
To stand out
Above the crowd
Even if I gotta shout out loud
The other three are standing off to the side, smiling and laughing heartily. Nicole sees Max continue to scan the crowd, and then he stops and stares at the front row, right at Roxanne, who was looking back at him and had a big goofy grin on her face, her knees pulled up to her chest.
'Till mine is the only face you see
Gonna stand out 'till you notice me!
A small flash of jealousy appeared in her eye, but she quickly masked it, not wanting to put a damper on the mood. She continues to look at Max, the smile on her face a bit smaller than before, while he struts up to the very front of the stage. As he moves forward, Bobby gets a hold of one of the school's fire extinguishers and sprays a foggy mist onto the stage for some visual flair.
"A little smokeage!" He said and then he lets out an excited howl.
If I could make you stop and take a look at me instead of just
Walkin' by
He stopped directly in front of Roxanne and leaned down towards her face, lip-synching the next lines directly to her.
There's nothin' that I wouldn't do
If it was getting' you to notice
I'm alive
If you would actually open your eyes, you would know there's already someone who notices you Nicole thought. If she was referring to herself or Roxanne, she didn't even know, but either way, she wasn't wrong.
"Hey guys!" Her train of thought stopped the moment she heard Bobby's voice coming from behind her. Turning around, she saw him hold out a hook attached to a rope towards her and PJ with a smirk. "Wanna make Max-man fly?"
"Uh..." PJ pondered nervously. Making his decision, he pushed Nicole in front of him. "Nick, how about you do it?"
Nicole snapped her head in his direction. "What?! Why me?"
"You're the smallest one out of all of us. No one will see you through the fog." Nicole looked back and forth between PJ and Bobby and rolled her eyes with a defeated sigh.
"Ugh, fine. Give me that thing." She snatched the rope from Bobby, got on her hands and knees, and started to crawl through the fog towards Max.
All I need is half a chance
A second thought, a second glance
Will prove I got whatever it takes
When she reached him, she attached the hook to his belt, and gave the other two standing off to the side a cue to lift Max up.
It's a piece of cake
Once Bobby pulled on an overhanging rope, Max was up in the air. He was thrown off for a second, but he immediately got back into the flow, and started lip-synching again.
To stand out above the crowd
Even if I gotta shout out loud
"Who is that guy!?" One of the girls in the crowd shouted in amazement.
Still flying through the air, Max managed to grab a basketball that one of the students held up for him, and dunked it into a basketball hoop- if he had listened close enough, he would've heard Nicole cheering wildly for that part- as he flew past it. He was flying closer to Roxanne, who was now standing in her seat, and slowly reached out his hand.
'Till mine is the only face you'll see
And just as his hand was about to come in contact with hers...
Gonna sta...
The rope he was attached to stopped short, and he was suddenly pulled backwards into a spin, as the music slows down and stops. Max was swung back towards the stage, and was stopped by an angry looking Principal Mazur, who took off his shades and revealed his identity to the whole auditorium.
"Hey, it's the Goof Boy!" one of the students shouted in surprise
The audience gasped, except Roxanne, who looked at Max with a smile.
Principal Mazur looked at Max and his friends, shaking his head in disappointment. Off to the side, Bobby had PJ in a one-arm headlock, and Nicole looked at the principal with a sheepish smile and gave him a small wave.
"We're busted!"
