***Zed***
I was slipping my leather jacket on and grabbing my keys in preparation for going and getting Val's - no, Phee's - morning 'coffee toffee' (as she called it) from the Costa in town as I had been doing for the past week, when the doorbell rang. It's 7:30, who would be coming to my house now?
"Zed?" Oh SHIT. It was her. I thought I'd gotten rid of her! Wasn't she meant to be under house arrest? I think the enforcer who was meant to be guarding her was going to get a tongue lashing. Or... I could not be here and go out the back? Yes, that is a marvellous idea. I turned around to do just that when Tilly called out "I know you're there, Zed, I can hear you trying to go out the back door." Curse her werewolf hearing! "Please, Zed, let me in. I need to talk to you."
With a feeling of impending doom, I opened the front door to reveal Tilly. Except it hardly looked like her. Her hair was brushed, she had clothes on that were actually her size and not two sized smaller and covered at least 70% of her skin.
"Tilly, what can I do for you? You're supposed to be under house arrest." I shot Harry, the enforcer behind her, a glare and he looked down.
"Zed, it's not Harry's fault. He's been really sweet." She twisted around and gave him a soft smile which he returned. This was good! If she and Harry were a thing, then she couldn't ruin what he was trying to build with Phee. "I'm allowed to leave the house with my enforcer when I'm going to see one of the Beta's," she stated, facing me again. Dammit I'd forgotten about that. I sighed and stepped to the side so she could come in. "Thank you, Zed."
We sat in the living room. "What did you want to speak to me about, Tilly?"
"I wanted to apologise to you about my behaviour at the challenge. It was childish and unprofessional." She bowed her head in apology and submission to her Beta. "I made you attack me and I deserved it. Valentine will make a much better Beta than I ever did." I raised my brow at her actually admitting it.
"It's okay, Tilly," I assured slowly.
"I know it's not, Zed, and that's why I want to try our relationship again. We had something." She here's the catch. She wanted to try 'us' again.
"I'm sorry, Tilly, but I don't think that our relationship was going anywhere. I want my true mate and I think you want yours as well. I'm sorry."
"Okay. I can understand that." She smiled at me and I knew it was sincere. "I think you're right." She stood and so did I. She held her arms out. "One last kiss goodbye, for old time's sake?" I smiled and stepped into her arms, and she kissed me right on the lips. She lingered a moment more than I thought she should, but it was our last, so I let her. It meant nothing, and if it gave her a sense of finality, then why not?
After she left with Harry I got onto my bike and rode to the main house. I didn't have enough time to get Phee's coffee but I had the rest of the week so I think she could excuse one day without having it.
I arrived at the house and ran into Val almost immediately as she was arriving herself with Cam, her best friend. I had finally figured out that he was gay by the way he was teasing Flynn and what he said when he was drunk. I no longer thought him as a threat but that didn't mean I liked any more, and neither did my wolf, but he wasn't stable anyway.
Cam drove off in Phee's car and she saw me. I could see the hesitation in her eyes before she smiled a little and walked to me. A couple of feet away, though the smile wavered and her nostrils flared. A look crossed her face and then her face rearranged again and gave me that polite smile.
I was confused. What had changed in a few seconds? I thought I had been doing really well with gently wooing her this past week. I thought she'd softened towards me. She nodded at me as she walked past me into the house. Her scent of sunshine and forest tickled my nose. Shit, scent! 'One last kiss, for old time's sake.' She smelt Tilly on me! Shit! I've been flirting with her all week and then she smells another female on me, and my ex, who was meant to be under house arrest. What would she think? Obviously the worst, judging how she acted just now.
I rushed into the house and through the corridors. Flynn appeared before me, stopping my advances. "Zed, we have to talk about the oil on the land, and-"
"Flynn, not right now, okay? I need to find Val," I said and ran around him. I found her in her office talking to an older female of the pack, Josephine. "Phee!" I said as I skidded to a stop outside her door. "Phee, I need to talk to you."
"Zed, I'm talking to Josephine right now," she sighed, annoyed and exasperatedly.
"Oh no, dear, it fine, I think we're done here, don't worry. I can see that you two need to talk. I'll come back later." Josephine patted Val's hand and passed me in a breeze of flower perfume.
"Phee, I can explain how-" I started but she cut me off, standing up to put papers away in the cabinet behind her desk.
"You have nothing to explain, Zed, it's not like we're going out or you have any tie to me. You rejected me, remember?" Ouch. Yeah, she was definitely pissed. "It's not that big of a deal, not enough to come skidding outside my office."
"But Phee, what if I want to go out with you? What if I want to have ties to you?" I pleaded, making her pause. I had her, I knew it, I had to phrase what I wanted to say carefully. "Phee, Valentine, I've regretted rejecting you since you came back. I thought I was protecting myself and I ended up hurting you and any chances of us being together instead. I'm sorry. I judged you wrong. I'm not asking you to forgive me, I'm asking you to give me another chance. Please, Valentine, can you do that? I only smelt of Tilly because she came to my house this morning. I told her that me and her were completely finished, for good." She was listening, I could tell even though she wasn't facing me. "Give me a chance," I pleaded again.
Slowly, she nodded. I grinned, big and wide. "But, we are not going out. I am opening the possibility of a friendship here, not a relationship. Am I clear?" she wagged her finger at me and she looked so damn cute telling me what to do.
"I won't let you down. I promise." And I wouldn't. Friendship wasn't quite what I was striving for, but it was a step in the right direction. I left her office feeling lighter. She was giving me a chance! Now I had to find Flynn. He wanted to talk to me before.
He was in the games room talking to some of the enforcers. "Zed, good you're here. You ran off before, and we need to talk about the oil." I nodded, serious. There had been an oil reserve found beneath our land. There weren't many in England, hardly any actually, and so there had been many people knocking on our door to buy it. Flynn and Zandra though were steadfast in their decision to turn each and every one of them down, no matter how much they offered. Unfortunatly, many of the pack were against that decision. They thought that the money from the oil would be worth it. What they failed to understand is that they would be clearing the forest which sat on top of the oil, which was bad enough, but also they would be invading our land, and then not leaving for a while. The previous Alpha's had bought the land so that the pack could use it as a safe haven for them to run and be themselves. If the oil drillers and machines came here onto it, we would be sacrificing that security.
"I've heard back from the environmentalist, and they're willing to look into the land to make it a national treasure. The forests here are old and so it might work," Flynn said, walking with me to his own office on the second floor. "We've had another offer, though, and it a lot of money, Zed. Also, the news of how much it is has spread within the pack. We have to quieten it down, and quickly."
"I agree. The next Pack run is in a few days, we can talk to them then." We would tell them how it was the worst possible thing to agree to it.
The rest of the day ran smoothly, but the best part was defiantly how Valentine had agreed to give me a chance.
