The cold woke me up in the middle of the night. I rolled over to curl up to James, but the bed was empty. I pushed myself up so I was sitting, and looked to the bathroom. All the lights were off. I slid out of bed and went to the closet to pull on one of James' t-shirts. I walked out of the bedroom and down the hallway towards the kitchen. The light over the table was on, and James was sitting in front of his computer. He had the open bottle of champagne next to him, with an almost empty glass.

I walked up to the table and grabbed his glass, taking the last sip from the glass

I walked up to the table and grabbed his glass, taking the last sip from the glass. "Whatcha doin' out here at 3am, Cowboy?" I said looking at him with a questioning eye.

"Research." he said, pulling me into him.

"What?" I asked, trying to turn around and see the computer screen. He firmly gripped my hips and pulled me into his lap so I was straddling him.

"I had an idea..."

"What kind of idea?" I asked.

"Promise me you won't freak out? This is just a thought..." he asked.

"No promises. My crazy can't be controlled." I said teasingly.

"What if, instead of you moving in here, or me moving in with you... What if we bought our own new place?"

I sat still for a moment thinking it over. "It's not a bad idea." I said hesitantly. "But, what if we buy a place together, and then something happens... you know, with us? I mean we haven't even been together long."

"Don't let the length of our relationship determine this. That doesn't matter, at all. Think about how you feel. How this relationship feels. Let that decide." He softly added, "If you don't want to buy something new, that is just fine. Like I said, this was just an idea."

"I'm not sure. I kind of feel like my mind and my heart are in conflict." I said biting my lip.

"Ok, that's fair. What if we just looked at a few places? No commitment. Just looking. If we find something that feels right, then we do it, if not, then we stay with one of our places." He suggested.

"I guess looking isn't going to hurt anything..." I said with a smile.

"Good." He said in a tone sounding like he just won. He leaned forward, reached behind me, and closed his computer. He stood up, holding me as I wrapped my legs around his waist. He carried me into the bedroom again, and gently laid me down on the bed, before sliding in himself. I curled up into his chest and easily fell back asleep.

...

It was Wednesday morning and I still needed to call my Mama back and let her know when we were coming. I made some coffee and took a cup to James who was at the kitchen table working. I took my cup and went onto the back patio to sit. I tried to prepare myself for this call, but Lord knows, it's pointless. I opened Mama's contact and hit 'call'.
