"So, what if it's us?
What if it's us and only us?
And what came before won't count anymore
Or matter?
Can we try that?
~ Only Us, Dear Evan Hansen
Alec's POV
I looked down at my wrist in shock, '10 miles.' My soulmate was ten miles away. They were here in Toronto.
They were here.
My twin brother and bandmate, Liam, walked in.
"Lex, stop staring at your numbers. Just cause you're looking at them doesn't mean they'll get any smaller," he said, shaking his head.
"Ten miles Liam. Ten. We're so close!" I muttered.
"But you can't go looking for them. We have a show in fifteen minutes. You can't leave." I looked up at him in disappointment.
"You think I don't know that? I know I can't leave. I can't disappoint our fans. Plus, it's the album release party. I don't want to leave." I sighed. "It doesn't make it easier though. They're somewhere in town right now and could be thousands of miles away by morning." Whoever my soulmate is, they travel a lot. The distance between our hometowns is only 396 miles, but they never spent a lot of time there. Liam sighed.
"Dude, it's fate. This whole thing is based on fate. If it's meant to be it will be. He or she may not even be the person you marry. They could end up being your best friend. Nick is my soulmate and he's my best friend."
"I know, I know. I just want to meet them. What if she is my future wife? How cool would that be?"
"And what if she is a he?"
"You know that doesn't matter," I said, rolling my eyes.
"I know it doesn't matter; I'm just saying. Look, you can exhaust yourself with 'what if's' all day and it will never get you anywhere. Now, come on, it's almost time for stage call." He said. I sighed and pulled all my bracelets on, covering my numbers.
I followed Liam out into the hallway, the buzz of set-up hitting me. My band, Ten Seconds to Midnight, had just released our first album and tonight was the album release party. In two weeks, we'd be heading out on our first world tour with Hearts on Fire. My mom and little sister, Camilla, walked in, Cami looking angry.
"What's wrong Cami?" I asked her. She glared at me.
"Hearts on Fire had a radio show today and Mom wouldn't let me go." She replied.
"She also wanted to go stand outside their hotel to try and meet them." Mom added.
"The bands staying at the Princeton hotel! It's only ten miles from here! I would have been back in time!" Cami protested.
"And I said you couldn't go. Now tell your brothers good luck and go find Dad." Cami stalked off, mumbling something that definitely wasn't 'good luck.'
"Dios mio," Mom sighed, shaking her head. "She's acting like the same kind of fan she likes to make fun of." I laughed and shook my head.
"She will get to meet the band in two weeks. She can be patient and wait." I pointed out.
"Yeah. She'll be fine." Liam added.
"Band! Stage!" our manager yelled. We gave mom a quick hug and then rushed to our other two members, Penelope and Ethan, who were already side stage with our stage manager, Sam.
"We made it! This is our album release show. Holy shit!" Ethan laughed. We circled around each other and put our hands in the middle.
"Nothing's better than this!" we chorused as the house lights turned down and the crowd got louder.
"Let's do this!" Nelly yelled. Sam gave us the cue and we ran onto the stage to greet the packed house.
When everything was over and I was back home, I Googled the distance between my house and the Princeton hotel. I had been distracted by those numbers all night, and by what Cami had said. The numbers on the screen matched the ones on my wrist. My soulmate was at that hotel. Screw fate, I was taking fate into my own hands. I was finally gonna meet my soulmate.
The next morning, I got up early to get ready. Today was the day I met my soulmate and I wanted to look my best. Twenty minutes later, I was ready to go. I started adding my bracelets without looking, finally glancing down at the counter, and saw that the numbers were moving. I sat down suddenly, watching the miles grow between us again. I was too late.
They were gone.

Finley's POV
I watched my numbers grow larger the further from Toronto we got. I was flying home surrounded by my best friends and bandmates. Our press tour was finally over. I was glad to be going home but I would have loved to stay in Toronto to try and meet my soulmate. My best friend, Emma sighed.
"Fin, it's fate. If you two were meant to meet, you would have met." She whispered.
"Screw fate," I grumbled. "This whole things is stupid. I just want to know who they are!"
"I know you do, but you've gotta be patient. I know that's hard for you." She teased. I glared at her.
"Easy for you to say. You know who your soulmate is!" I said, glancing over at her. She looked at me and rolled her eyes. Emma's soulmate was her friend Lucy, her best friend since Kindergarten.
"I know Finley. Just give it time. You will meet them eventually." She laughed, putting her earbuds in. I closed my eyes for a second, then turned back to Emma, watching her drum along to whatever she was listening to.
EmmaDarling is our twenty-year-old guitarist. Em was a few inches shorter than me and average weight, yet she was still strong. She had long, dyed blue-black hair and light blue-grey eyes. Across the aisle from her is twenty-one-year- old IsabellaHarris, our bands bassist. Izzy is tall and lean, yet still muscular. Her hair was long and black, styled into braids like Shuri wears in the Black Panther movie, with dark brown-almost black eyes, the color of the coffee she loved to drink. Beside Izzy was her soulmate and our nineteen-year-old drummer, Kathryn Bennet. Kit is short and curvy, with fair skin and freckles splashed across her nose and cheeks. She had auburn hair that fell into wavy curls right below her shoulders and hazel eyes, a little bit of brown mixed into earthy green. I'm 5"3, average weight and lean, with a little bit of muscle. I had fair skin starting to tan over from the sun and long, wavy-curly light golden brown hair and bright green eyes. I'm our bands almost twenty-year-old lead singer. I sighed again and plugged my earbuds into my laptop, pulling up Netflix and settling in for the flight.
