It was a beautiful day outside. Birds were singing, flowers were blooming, and the hunters were happily conversing with eachother in the manor's living room since there would be no matches today. Eventually, they started talking about chess and some even decided to play it.
"I have no interest in playing chess because the queen is the easiest piece to take," Mary said, and suddenly everyone's eyes were on her.
"No Mary, you're just bad at chess," you nonchalantly said, breaking the short silence, which then caused the room to erupt in laughter.
Now feeling embarrassed because of your comment, she replied saying, "N-no I'm not! I know how to play chess very well!" Even though she knew damn well that she did not know how to play chess.
"Wanna bet?" You challenged her, bringing up one of the many chess boards the manor had for some reason
"Damn straight I do!" Mary practically yelled at you before taking a seat in front of you.
[A Few minutes later]
"Mary, what the fuck," you said after she placed her pawn right in front of your pawn, "that is not how far a pawn moves. Do you even know what you're doing?"
"Hmph, I knew that. I was just testing your knowledge," she said and moved the pawn a few steps back.
After several turns, which mostly involved you scolding Mary for moving the pieces the wrong way and Mary making ridiculous excuses, you ended up winning because she made the stupid decision of placing her queen right in front of your queen.
"I was right, you really are bad at chess," you said and sighed in disappointment
Mary, who was now flustered, said, "No I'm not! You just got lucky! Let's have a rematch and I'll show you my true Ultimate Chess skills!"
That was a lie. You ended up beating her ten more times without even having to try because she kept leading her pieces to their death, not having a sense of strategy. She was so bad at chess that you felt like the Ultimate Chess Prodigy in front of her.
"Let's have a rematch, she said. It would be easy, she said..."
"Shut up, (y/n)..." Mary said, admitting defeat, and slowly making her way back into her room as you did the same since you were tired and sleepy.
[The next day]
You woke up and noticed a small note underneath your door. You picked it up, reading it aloud, "Please teach me how to play chess properly."
Bitch. You knew who this was from.
You opened the door and found Mary in front of it.
'What the fuck. How long was she standing there,' you wondered but decided to ask, "What's with the sudden interest in Chess?"
"I need to take back the dignity that I lost to you because of chess," she replied.
"So you're going to do that by having me teach you how to play chess?"
"Yes."
"No thanks," you said then closed the door again. You were tired, you wanted to sleep because you had a match later and you didn't want to be tired during the match.
A few hours later, you made your way to the waiting room where you saw the survivors who you would be up against.
'Naib, Eli, Fiona, and Melly... what a cute bunch, they all have hoods,' You thought and smiled to yourself.
You were interrupted when Eli approached you with two letters in his hand. "Um, Mary told us to give this to you," Eli said.
'Mary what now. What did she do? Did she really ask the survivors on my match to send her letters to me? What the fuck Mary.'
Though you were mildly irritated, you took the letters from his hand and read them. Of course, it was just as you expected. Despite being rejected hours ago, she still wanted you to teach her how to play chess.
After the match, you felt exhausted, so you decided to walk back to your room immediately. You opened the door to your room, and found Mary there.
'How the fuck did she get into my room. It was locked.' you thought to yourself, and gave her a questioning look.
"I used the mirror," she said as if she read your mind, "now please teach me how to play chess."
"But why?"
"I already told you hours ago!"
"But why?"
"Because I wanted you to know...?"
"But why?"
"But why?"
"Okay fine," you decided to agree only because you wanted peace and quiet, and you knew that once she wanted something, she would stop at nothing to get it.
[Several Days later]
You weren't the best at chess, but you taught her all the strategies you knew and everything else you could possibly teach her, and with that, she somehow managed to become a Chess God. She even beat Galatea, who was supposedly impossible to beat.
She even had the confidence to challenge everyone to a match of Chess, and that she did right now.
Jack, who sat beside you, noticing how sleep-deprived you looked, asked, "What's up with you?"
Slowly turning your heard towards him, you said, "I raised that kid," and pointed to Mary.
Jack turned to Mary, then back at you.
"Can you raise me too?"
"No thanks," you said before collapsing due to not being able to sleep for three days straight.
