Chapter 7
Mitch didn’t stop running until we got to a cliff. It had an amazing view over the lake, and everyone was only about 500m away, so I wasn’t too worried. The cliff was roughly ten metres high, perfect for diving. I love heights, and apparently Mitch knew about this. “Wanna’ swim, Dizz?” I looked at him. His eyes were glowing with adrenaline. I ripped of my shawl and said “Not if I can beat you to it!” Did a run up and dove from the edge of the cliff.
The water was perfect, clear, cool and sparkling. I looked up at him. “What are you waiting for?! Scaredy cat!” Teasing him. He grinned and dove. A perfect dive too, barely any splash at all, his arms were straight and he had brilliant streamline. He was under for a while, I thought he was playing a trick on me, and laughed for a while. But he never came up. I gulped in some air and ducked under searching for him frantically.
I found him at last, passed out, near a rock, he must have hit his head on it, but humans float, why didn’t he rise? I saw that his ankle was tangled in some pond weeds. I had to give him CPR, but I couldn’t do it with his leg caught. I kissed him, and gave him the remainder of my oxygen. Then set on untangling the weeds. He started regaining consciousness, and kicked free. I needed air, right then. I was drowning, choking I couldn’t breathe. He grabbed me and we both kicked as hard as me could to the surface.
That first gasp of air, I was alive again. But Mitch used all his energy saving me when I went to save him, he passed out again. I had to get him to land. “HELP! SOMEONE! ANYONE! SAVE US!” but I knew no one would hear us, I was tired, I had to support him and myself, I started doing one armed freestyle towards the shore. But it took so much out of me, so I had to do this weird survival stroke.
I swam for ten minutes or so, and I was already exhausted. Mitch started hyperventilating, trying to get oxygen, I thought he inhaled some water back at the cliff. I was about to give up, I thought about dying there, with Mitch by my side. But then I saw the others. The lakes’ edge was only half a kilometre away. I could make it, easily. “Hold on, Mitch, we’re nearly there.” I hugged him closer to me and swam on.
When I was able to hear some of the other’s voices, I got really strong, and gliding through the water effortlessly, I was tired, my limbs ached. I loved Ian, and I wanted to be back with him. But I also loved Mitch, and I couldn’t let him die know. I heard Maddie say my name, then Daniel and a few others. “Hey look, there they are. Guys its Mitch and Dizzy! Hey over here!” Josh picked up on the emergency. “Guys something is wrong!” Maddie screamed, “Mitch is unconscious!” “Ian you’re a good swimmer right? Go save them!” He started to swim out to us but I denied him.
“Stay away!” I took charge. “Its deep here, and there are pond weeds which easily trap you! Ian go to the shallows and be ready to help me carry him to the shore. Maddie, Nick go get the first aid kit! Daniel call for an ambulance. Josh, Max, and everyone else... GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!” I couldn’t finally stand. I put Mitch on my shoulders, and dragged him with me over to Ian. Ian carried him to the bank while I got my breath back. “Josh, get some water... NO NOT FROM THE LAKE RETARD!” I screamed.
Ian put Mitch on the dry ground. He didn’t know CPR as well as me so I had to do it. I put him in recovery position and gave him oxygen until he coughed up water and started breathing on his own. Daniel ran and told me that there was no signal here and that the phone in the lodge wasn’t connected. Nick got back and threw the first aid kit at me. I caught it and got to work. “I need a splint, someone get me a stick, now I think his arm is broken!” While I waited for the splint I bandaged his head, it was bleeding heavily, I disinfected it with the Detol, but Josh couldn’t find any clean water, so I ended up having to dilute it was the lake’s water.
Everyone crowded around me and Mitch. He started regaining consciousness, while I was bandaging his arm; it wasn’t broken, just severely strained. “D...Dizz? You’re okay? Thank... goodness.” He used his good arm to wipe the tears from my eyes. “Thank you for saving me.” I said. “I should be saying that, Dizz.” He smiled weakly. “Shut up, don’t speak.” I turned and heard some sobs from Sarah, she’s so kind, Ian hugged her, and comforted everyone. Nick and Daniel started making a stretcher out of a beach towel and some small logs.
I kissed him, gently. Then fell into the darkness, just let me rest, I am tired. I just need some sleep, Ian.... Maddie.... Mitch
