Homesickness

After we all went back to the Task Force building it seemed that things were moving slowly. Light had taken on the title of 'L' while thinking the original was dead. The Task Force members would constantly ask me what was going to happen or when something would happen. All I would tell them is to wait. I didn't know when I would be leaving either. It's been 5 years since I came into the anime and I was missing my home in my world. I joined the investigation in 2004 and it's 2009 now. Every day it felt like I was stuck here and that I would never be able to go home. In the anime, it barely tells the watcher how many years pass when something happens so living it this world makes it feel longer. Light and Misa moved in together and they let me stay with them in an extra room they had. I would visit Lawliet and Watari very little, so Misa or Light wouldn't be suspicious of me. I still wasn't able to do a lot of things on my own because my name still wasn't in the system. I knew what was going to happen next and that would be Sayu's kidnapping. Then we would be contacted by Near. When we did get Sayu's picture we investigated the show in the background. When I saw the ' N ' appear on the screen I smiled.

" I'm pleased to meet you at last, L number two. "

Light didn't look pleased and the voice on the other end of the phone had a voice changer so we couldn't hear their real voice. I knew Near would pull the same tricks as Lawliet did when he first met Light Yagami.

" Number two? What do you mean by that? Who is this? "

" There's really no point in trying to hide it. We are a new organization known as the SPK or Special Provision for Kira. It was established to find and capture Kira without the help of L. Furthermore, seven of our top members already know of L's death. As for myself, I'm at the center of the SPK. You can address me as N. "

They both paused for a minute. I waited for the conversation to continue.

" I told you we don't rely on L but that's a bit of an understatement. The FBI and the CIA have explicitly asked that I head up their investigation, not you. Having said that, we are outraged by the recent murder of the director of the NPA and feel something must be done. After revealing the information, I believe there's a possibility that solving this case could lead to the arrest of Kira. As such, I'm willing to lend you my full support. Is there a problem, L? "

" No. It's just following the death of Takimura, Deputy Director Yagami's daughter was kidnapped and we believe the same person is behind it. He's arranged for a trade in Los Angeles. "

" A trade? The girl in exchange for the notebook, I assume? "

   " Yes. "

" Understood. I'll have a team on standby in L.A. but for now, they'll be working on a need-to-know-basis. My cell can monitor the city via satellite, or...On second thought, I'll let you have full authority on this, L. "

Then he hung up the phone. Everyone in the room looked shocked that Near gave Light full control over the situation.

" THat's good, at least we're taking the lead. " Aizawa said.

" But what's this about the Americans not trusting L anymore? I don't like that sound of that. " Ide stated looking at me

" It means that they don't want to be involved in this any further with L. " I said.

" What do you mean? "

" Well, let's look at it from a different perspective. The Americans have seen that L caught a lead on who Kira was and that was the Yotsuba group. More specifically Higuchi. Then after an intense chase, we capture Higuchi to only see him die by the real Kira. After that many other people have died in the process. So the Americans don't want to rely on L anymore because they thought what we did with the Yotsuba group was just a wild goose chase and that L should have known because he is the world's greatest detective. Now they don't see him like that anymore because they think they were led on. "

   " I see. " Mr. Yagami said.

" But they don't know the information that we know. They don't know about the notebook. " Matsuda countered.

" That may be so, but they see L as unprofessional and unreliable now by what the media has shown the world. There's nothing we can do about it now because if we reveal the notebook it would only lead to chaos. "

   " Y/n's got a point. "

" Not to be rude or anything, Y/n but do you know when you'll return back to your world? Don't get me wrong, having you here has been amazing but you've been here for 5 years. I would have thought you would have gone back home by now. " Aizawa said.

" I know. I don't know when I'll be going back. " I said feeling sadness come over me.

' It was shorter in the anime because they only showed the important parts during those 5 years. It feels like it's been too long here for me. '

" Hey, kid, I didn't mean to make up upset. "

" It's alright, Aizawa, I've been wondering about that lately as well. I didn't think I would be here for so long. they only showed the important parts of the story in the anime because that's how everything is shown. They never show what happens every day because it would bore the audience. It's just...I guess the homesickness is hitting me hard lately. "

Everyone stayed silent and didn't say a word about my situation. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I saw that it was Aizawa who placed his hand there. He showed me a small smile and I just looked at him. I sighed and stood up from my spot on the chair. I walked to the elevator and pressed the button for the top floor. The elevator traveled upwards and when it reached the very top of the building I left it behind and climbed the stairs to the rooftop. I opened the door and stepped outside. I looked up at the stars around me.

I started to pick out the constellations I knew from back home and I realized something.

' They're the same set of stars. I guess no matter where you go you will always see the same stars. '

I felt tears come to the edge of my eyes and I didn't want to let them leak out of my eye, but they did without my consent. The hot tears trailed down my face and neck as I still looked up at the beautiful night sky. I didn't sob or let out any noise. I just stood there, looking at the stars, and crying.
