The last few weeks of camp were filled with fires, swimming, singing, hikes, and games. Eventually, however, the summer had to come to an end.

It was the final day of camp, and everyone was packing up to go home. John looked around at the group.

He remembered how scared and annoyed he was last summer when he had to come to camp. He was afraid it would be homophobic, unaccepting, and that he would have to live the entire summer in fear.

But that wasn't what he got. At all.

He remembered being greeted by Isabelle, the sweet counselor at the front desk. She had sensed that John's father wasn't exactly the best parent and shooed him out of camp immediately.

He remembered getting to know the Schuylers, Maria, and Cath. How bold Angie was, how endearing Eliza was, how hilarious Peggy was, and how supportive Cath was. And how they helped each other through everything, including setting each other up.

He remembered meeting Aaron and Theo, and how nervous they both were to make the first move. But once they were finally together, it was clearly meant to be.

He remembered getting to know Laf and Herc. They were sarcastic, funny, spontaneous- but they were also kind, supportive, and loving. And if you ever needed to have a serious conversation, you could get that with them.

And finally, he remembered meeting Alex. His now-boyfriend. He never forgot the sparks he felt the first time they kissed. The butterflies he got every time he caught Alex staring at him. The way he felt when he saw Alex step out of his car for the first time, only to find out that they were cabin-mates.

John looked around at everyone as they checked their bags, grabbing the last few items. He smiled as his eyes rested on Connor and Heather, Jeremy and Michael, Jared, Evan, and Squip. They had made camp and even more special place than was possibly imaginable.

Suddenly, a car horn honked. It was Henry Laurens. John's father. John sighed and turned to face Alex, taking his hands.

"Can I see you again soon?" he asked. Alex smiled sadly and nodded.

"I'll miss you, love," Alex replied, pulling John into a tight hug.

John couldn't speak. He felt the tears brimming his eyes and didn't trust himself to be able to hold them back.

"I love you," he whispered as a single tear streaked his face.

Alex pulled back and wiped the tear away, smiling.

"I love you too," he said. "I can't wait to see you again."

John smiled. That's just what they said last year.

"It's only a matter of time."
