Ellen Reed squinted at the clock, seeing that it was now midnight. She sighed, looking down at the assignment she had been working on all night.
'Twenty more minutes,' she thought, picking her pencil up once more, and continuing to work. Twenty minutes turned into one hour, and one hour turned into two. Soon enough, she had finished her assignment on the impacts of ballet on the modern world at four in the morning. Immediately turning her light off, she laid down and fell asleep.
Ellen woke up, and realized she had overslept. She hopped out of bed, getting dressed and quickly brushing her hair, not having time to eat breakfast. She ran to her car and drove to her class, only barely making it in time. She sat in her seat for intro to the history of ballet, ready for the lesson. She looked in her bag, only to realize that she had forgotten her papers from the day before. She mentally groaned as she pulled out a new piece of paper, ready to redo all of her notes. Soon enough, the class was over and she had five minutes to walk to her dance class. She quickly made her way to the locker room, changing into her tights and leotard. She wrapped her hair in a tight bun and began to stretch at the bar. The class filed in, and they drilled choreography for the next two hours. Ellen yawned as she dressed back into her shirt and skirt and packed her dance supplies back into her backpack. By the time the day was over, Ellen was exhausted. She knew that she should try to drop a class or an extracurricular activity, but she couldn't bring herself to give anything up. She decided to call Alex and tell him that she couldn't make their date that night.
"Hello?" Alex said into the phone receiver.
"Hey, Alex," Ellen said. "I'm sorry to do this but I have to cancel tonight."
"Ellen, this is the second time this week. Is everything okay?" He asked her. She quickly shot the question down.
"Oh yeah. I just have a ton of work to do," she said. Alex crossed his arms, leaning the phone between his shoulder and his ear.
"Okay. We'll reschedule," he said.
"Thanks for understanding, Alex," she said. He nodded.
"Yeah. Anytime," he said. They said their goodbyes and hung up the phone. Alex wondered if everything really was okay. He knew that Ellen was swamped with classes this semester. He decided that she had probably just done too much too fast. Still, it didn't stop him from worrying.
Ellen curled up in her bed and fell asleep immediately, not realizing that she hadn't eaten all day.
After two more days of the similar schedule, Ellen was sitting on the Keaton's couch, her boyfriend right next to her.
"We should probably leave now if we wanna make the movie," Alex said, checking his watch.
Ellen nodded. He stood up and held his hand out to her. She took in in her own and he pulled her up. Standing up too fast, she began to feel dizzy. She held her head and closed her eyes tightly.
"Ellen? Hey, honey, what's wrong?" Alex asked, but her hearing began to fade away. She sat back down on the couch, and Alex followed.
"I-I don't know-," she started, before everything went black.
"Whoa whoa whoa," Alex said quickly, catching her. He kneeled down and laid her back. "Oh my god. Hey, hey, Ellen. Can you hear me?"
His family was out of the house, which made him even more nervous. He remembered the steps he had learned in health class his sophomore year of high school. Grabbing a pillow, he set it under her legs to elevate them. He then unzipped her jacket slightly, removing the restriction from her neck. After further inspection, he noticed that her face had paled noticeably. Hearing her stomach grumble, he began to panic. He continued to talk to her, even though she wasn't responding. As he was about to stand up and call his mom, she began to regain consciousness. Alex closed his eyes gratefully.
