The grass on the meadow danced along with the soft breeze. The blue sky was littered with white cotton candy clouds. Everything around them seemed pleasant as they rested under the shade of an oak tree.
They were cuddled up together, their eyes tangled with one another. They were closed off in their own world and ignored the presence of their comrades.
If only they could live in peace like this forever.
"Promise me one thing." She suddenly spoke. "Once this is all over, let's settle down here and create our own little world."
"Of course." He looked up to the sky, reaching for a cloud. "That's covered in the promise I made when I gave you that ring. Death will be the only thing to tear us apart."
"Is that so? Is that why you let me die? To have a reason not to fulfill your promise?"
"Huh?"
Her soulless eyes stared into him as her hands wrapped around his neck. She was dead, yet how was she here?
"HOW COULD YOU LET ME DIE?!"
"NO!"
Jisung woke up, fresh hot tears falling from the corner of his eyes. His hand goes up to feel his sweaty neck.
He removed the handkerchief that covered his eyes. He blinked, letting his vision clear up.
An umbrella, which he didn't remember setting up, shielded him from the sun's harsh rays. He moved the umbrella aside and got up in an unsteady manner. A couple of feet away from him was Sejeong who was preoccupied with her sketchbook.
She had her hair up in a bun, a couple of stray hairs falling onto her face. Her lower lip was trapped between her teeth as she she worked with careful strokes. She had her earphones in and was too focused to notice him wake up.
He sat beside her, keeping a safe distance away. He couldn't resist the urge to squeeze the thick bun. He was somewhat satisfied at the silky touch and smiled. Sejeong removed one of her earphones and raised a brow at him.
"Do you know how hard it is to get the perfect messy bun?" She questioned. "Beauty is a pain you know."
"Sorry." He quietly apologized. He placed her handkerchief in her open bag and watched her draw. She handed him one of her earphones and adjusted the volume.
"I hope you're fine with disney songs because that's what I mostly have. If you don't then I have some Steven Universe and Adventure Time songs." She said.
"I'm surprised you're still here after Jaemin and Jeno talked to you." Jisung mumbled, leaning back.
"How do you know they confronted me?"
"Jaemin talked to me after you left. Not that I care." He yawned.
"Is there a reason I shouldn't be here?" She asked, continuing her sketch. "I'm here to get to know you for you, not the rumors about you. If I die, at least I died trying. I want to hear your side too so it's fair."
"Whatever. No matter what they tell you, you'll only listen to what you want to hear." He sighed.
"Where did you go off to for the last three days?"
"I exercise my right to remain silent." He countered. She rolled her eyes at his response. "This song is pretty good."
"It's from Sleeping Beauty, but I like this version from Maleficent better. It gives off this vibe that I like better since it feels more realistic." She admitted, piquing the boy's curiosity.
"How so?"
"The one from Sleeping Beauty to be frank feels like you're singing for someone you fell for at first sight. For the Maleficent version... it's like you've been waiting so long and you're finally reunited with the person you love." She explained.
"Basically put, you find it more romantic because it gives you the soulmate feel?" He summarized.
"I guess? I believe that when souls bound by fate are forced apart, they'll always find a way back to where they belong." She added. "But honestly, soulmates don't have to be romantic at all. You can find a soulmate in a friend too."
"How would you know if they're your friend soulmate or your romantic soulmate?"
"You'll feel it in your heart." She answered, finishing her drawing. She noticed his furrowed brows and chuckled. "Cheesy, isn't it?"
"Sounds like bullshit to me." He huffed. "If you love someone, you love someone. No connection, no past lives."
"Won't be until you experience it." She huffed, ripping the page from her sketchbook. "Here. I couldn't resist the urge to draw you with how cute you look sleeping."
He looked at the drawing. It was a simple sketch of him, but he couldn't ignore the little doodles around him. A bunny seemed to be hanging from his shoulder while a hamster sat on his face. "You think I'm cute?"
"Key word is sleeping, Park." She pointed out.
"But you think I'm cute either way." He grinned.
"I take it back, you're annoying as hell. Give me the drawing back!" She tried to snatch the paper from him, but he was quicker.
"I refuse." Jisung declared, holding the paper close to his chest. "It's mine now."
Sejeong tried to snatch it from him again, but Jisung was quicker. He stood up and raised the paper above his head, keeping it out of reach from the girl. She tried to jump to grab it but it was no use.
He put his hand on the crown of her head to keep her down, sticking his tongue out at her to tease her. He won this round with his height.
"At least let me draw a mustache on it so it isn't cute anymore!" She pestered, still trying to grab it.
"Over my dead body." Jisung refused.
"An easy bargain I see." She grinned, attacking his sides. Jisung pursed his lips together and tried to avoid her attacks. "So you're ticklish!"
"I'm not responsible for your injuries if you continue that." He warned. Sejeong didn't care and continued to try to tickle him. She chased him around the rooftop, but he used his magic to his convenience.
"That's not fair!" She huffed, kicking the glass barrier between them. He had changed the fence into glass before she could even climb it.
