——————————————————————Robin, who now goes by Roman, looked out at their mom, wondering what she would say in response. Not only did Roman come out as non-binary, but they also came out as toric, which means they're attracted to people who identify as male.
Their mom was silent for a minute before going. "I- that's not right. I'm not calling Roman because i named you Robin for a reason. And they/them is used for referring to people plurally." She said lightly, continuing to drive the car. Unaware of the effect she has on her child.
Roman opened their mouth, tears bringing their eyes. They didn't know what to say. They thought their mom, out of anyone, would've at least been somewhat supportive. Roman reaches and ran a hand through their, about chin length, hair, hoping they won't have to cut it any shorter.
They looked around, before landing their eyes on someone "Mom. I could look at that person and say, oh they must be having a good day. You can use they/them to refer to people as singular too." Roman tried to explain, knowing that it's not going to work. It never does
She nodded and looked at the same person "Yes. And that's because people use it as a slang word. It's still used as plural." She said lightly.
Roman wanted to scream. They wanted to scream to the rooftops. Why?! Why couldn't she just understand? She can use it for strangers, but for them, it's different apparently. She can't use slang for her own kid.
Roman bit their tongue, trying their absolute best to not cry. After the hype all their friends brought. It was for nothing. It was no use trying to get her to understand.
They looked down, unsure what to say. They wanted support from their family. People to lean on, all they had we're their friends. And they were too far away from all of them to talk to them easily. Texting was the next best for that.
The car ride was silent, and Roman didn't want to talk. Dysphoria was already being a bitch that day, and now, they're lacking the support they needed, but would never get.
Once the two got home Roman, didn't hesitate to move into their room. They wanted, well really needed, to be alone. He sniffled lightly moving to text their boyfriend, wanting to talk to someone.
Ro-bro: hey babe, mind if we talk for a bit?
The puRpman: yeah sure! something bother you?
Ro-bro: so uh- i came out to my mom. like you suggested
The puRpman: sunshine that's awesome! how'd it go?
Ro-bro: not goodRoman sniffled, accepting a facetime call that Virgil was sending them. Roman wiped their eyes, plugging in their headphones, incase Virgil said something they didn't want their mom to hear.
"Hey sunshine. You okay?" Virgil asked softly, knowing what the answer was going to be. Roman simply shook their head, crying softly, covering their mouth, trying to be as quiet as possible.
Virgil sighed softly, "Hey, hey, hey. Baby it's okay. You're going to be okay." He whispered softly into the phone, watching his partner helplessly cried on the other line.
The next few minutes was spent trying to calm down a Roman, succeeding at one point, but honestly, Roman was just emotionally drained. Luckily it was already late for the two. The two ended up falling asleep on a facetime call. Roman knew they're not going to have the support they need.
But hey. Tomorrow's another day
