The rest of lunch was normal. Almost too normal. I didn't feel like talking about Celesta anymore, so I just listened to the conversation as I bit off small bites from my apple.
Then P.E. came. I'm not even sure if the gym teacher, Coach Thompson, decided to make plans for today, because even if he did, he didn't use it.
Ben whispered some words into Coach's ear before the bell rang and then walked away. I knew that being in a gang meant advantages, but by the looks of it, Ben was practically threatening him.
When P.E. officially started, everyone was already in the gym and forming a semi-circle around Coach Thompson.
"We'll be playing dodgeball, the captains are Genevieve Locke and Ben Peters," he said.
I sighed as I walked to the middle of the circle, to the left of Coach Thompson. Ben proudly walked and stood to the right of Coach.
I glared at Ben, who was grinning widely. As Coach explained the—completely obvious—instructions, me and Ben were talking behind his back—literally.
"What are you up to this time?" I groaned.
"You'll see." Ben grinned again and faced back to the front.
Coach Thompson smiled at me. "Ladies first, Genevieve."
I faced the front and looked at everyone. "You." I pointed to a muscular dude who kept looking down. He looked up and made a small smile. I assumed he was happy that he was picked first.
"My turn," Ben said in a sing-song voice. "Devin, I choose you."
Devin grinned as she walked up to Ben. Then she, extremely disgustingly, pecked Ben's cheek.
"Ben, why?" I whispered from behind Coach. "Her? Seriously?"
I couldn't hear Ben's reply because Coach said, "Genevieve, it's your turn."
In the end, I ended up with a few nerdy kids who looked really skinny for their age and some muscular dudes who looked like they were forty.
Truth be told, the muscular dudes scared me, but I figured they were my best bet of winning.
