Chapter Nine
That continued for seven days in a row.
For a week striaght Drew and I met at the park in the afternoon. We talked, we laughed, we cuddled, we kissed. We stayed for hours until the sun went down and the moon showed its face. Sometimes we continued our game of 21 Questions.
For a week straight Grady and I met at the park around ten, or eleven, or sometimes even twelve. When I was done with Drew I'd run up to Starbucks and get us frappacinos. We'd sit, we'd talk, sometimes we took a walk. One or two times we resumed our game of 21 Questions. No matter how hard I tried to deny it, no matter how much he tried to conceal it, we both had feelings for each other and we knew it. But we had to keep those feelings in check. We had to keep them tucked away in a corner. We had to.
On the eighth day Drew asked me to be his girlfriend.
"Smoothies?" I said when I saw Drew sitting in our usual spot.
"And strawberries!" Drew said pulling out a small plastic container of strawberries.
He gave me a peck on the cheek.
"Delish," I said after I had a strawberry. "You try," I told Drew. He opened his mouth and I slid a strawberry in.
"Mmm," Drew said, "delish alright." He gave me a soft kiss on the lips.
Butterflies! I smiled. Taking a sip of the smoothie I said, "Smoothies, strawberries, and limited edition kisses? What have I done to deserve this?"
He answered me with a kiss. "The real question is," he gave me another kiss, "what have I done to deserve you?" His hand grazed my cheek softly. He looked at me deeply, intensely.
I blushed and smiled.
"There's something I want to ask you," Drew said. He stuck a hand in his pocket and held my hand with his free hand. I've had a lot of fun with you. This past week has been awesome." He cleared his throat. "I was, uh, wondering if you would be...my...girlfriend?" He pulled out a box and opened it. Inside was a ring. There was a bright blue sapphire in the middle, encircled in sterling silver.
I gasped. "Drew...." I trailed off.
"Well?" Drew asked. He looked nervous.
"It's so pretty. Of course, of course, I'll be your girlfriend," I said remembering what he asked me.
I kissed him. Long and deep and hard.
"Whoa," Drew said when he pulled apart. He smiled, took the ring out the box, and slid it on my finger.
It fit perfectly.
"Thank you," I said giving him another kiss.
He smiled. "Come on," he said grabbing my hand and standing up.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"Dinner."
"But I'm not dressed."
We both looked down at my white Forever 21 racerback tank, cuffed boyfriend jeans, and white Old Navy flip flops.
"That's okay," Drew reassurred me.
"If you say so," I said. I dropped the strawberries in my bag and gave Drew his smoothie. "What about my car?"
"I'll you back off here."
"If you say so," I repeated taking another sip of my smoothie.
He gave me a kiss on the cheek and we walked to his car, hand in hand.
