Chapter One
"Ooh. Third date this week, twenty seventh date in two months. Sounds like he's a keeper," I said.
"He is," agreed my mother, Lynn.
"Ha. Sure. That's what they all say," said my brother, Evan.
"Just keep setting the table," I ordered.
"Shut up, Aynsley," Evan said, lightly punching me in the arm.
"Ugh. I hope you're going to shower," I said pinching my nose and waving Evan away.
"Whatever," Evan said. He tromped up the stairs and I heard the water run.
"Mom, if Brady isn't cute, I swear-" I started.
"Aynsley, his name is Grady," my mother corrected me.
"Yeah, anyhow. He better not be a pig and if he's an oldie I'm throwing my salad in his face," I told my mom as I sat the salad and garlic bread on the table.
"Aww," my mother chuckled. "Aynsley, please be nice. You know it has been awhile and I don't think I've completely run out of luck." She set the lasagna on the table.
"Ugh, mom. You're getting 'guilt' all over my new oufit," I complained and pretended to wipe off my black Forever21 cardigan and white Anthropologie blouse.
"Haha," my mom laughed and gave me a hug.
"Sure," I hugged her back.
Evan bounded down the stairs and the doorbell rang.
"That's him!" my mom squealed. She walked briskly out of the dining room and through the foyer, taking deep breaths.
I pulled my long, dark brown hair and tossed half of it over my shoulder, the other half cascading down my back in fresh waves. I turned to see my mom making out with the guy at the door.
"Wow, Mom's finally getting some action!" Evan whispered.
"Haha, shut up!" I shushed Evan and poked him the stomach with a shiny, freshly polished black fingernail.
My mom shut the door and made her way over.
"I'm Evan," Evan introduced himself.
"I'm Grady, nice to meet you," Grady said and they shook hands and slapped each other on the back.
I kept my head held down as Grady walked over toward me.
"Hi, I'm Grady," Grady said extending his hand.
At the same time I looked up and delicately took his hand. His bright, emerald green eyes instantly clicked with my deep blue, turquoise ones. Was that...a spark? We shook each others hands slowly.
"I'm Aynsely," I breathed.
"Beautiful name. It's a pleasure to meet you," Grady said in a slightly mesmerized way. His eyes trailed over my body, then he rested his gaze back on my eyes.
Grady couldn't possibly be more than thirty to my mother's thirty-five. I couldn't believe my mother caught someone as gorgeous as him. His emerald green eyes stood out from his dark, sandy blonde and light brown hair that messily flopped into his eyes. With his strong jaw, defined nose, and slightly crooked smile, he was perfect...for me, at least.
Realizing we were still holding hands, I immediately drew my hand back.
"Why don't we get to know each other a little better?" I suggested then headed toward the dining room.
The others followed and we took our places at the table. Skipping the salad I placed a generous portion of lasagna on my plate. I took a look at everyone around the table. Evan was neatly eating his salad first; being the nice, neat, and sort of prim person that he sometimes is. I took a look towards my mother who took a sip of wine then laughed heartily at something Grady said. As she laughed, Grady stole a glance at me and gave a flirty smile with a sparkle in his eye. I returned to my lasagna, gladly digging in.
"So, Grady, tell us about yourself," Evan said, then took a bite of a breadstick.
"Well, I graduated from UCF, I co-own a restaraunt, and I'm twenty-seven years young," Grady said.
"I hope it mentions you have no children in your description," I said taking a gulp of water.
"Nope," he answered.
"Ever been arrested?" I ask.
"No," he said.
"Ever been married?"
"Once. Four months."
"Why did you divorce?"
"It was just too early, and I wasn't ready."
"Ever cheated - on anything?"
"No."
"Drink?"
"Yes."
"Alcoholic?"
"Of course not."
"Drugs?"
"Never."
"Could you see yourself in the near future with us?"
"Certainly."
"Ever streaked?"
"Nooo."
"Eh, okay. But boring."
"Aynsley," my mom finally cut in. "Those questions are a little...personal, don't you think?"
"Just needed some dirt," I sighed.
"Sorry," my mom whispered. She then kissed Grady on the lips, and they proceeded to make out.
"They obviously want a sock to put on the door," I said to Evan.
Evan and I doubled over with laughter as we trudged up the stairs to provide "privacy."
