*Present day*
It's been 5 years. I have this beautiful daughter. I have not thought about my past. I'm happy. She's all I have, and she's all I need. I love seeing her beautiful smile.
I just hope I don't see any familiar faces ever again. When I say unfamiliar, I mean Dean. He's the father of my beautiful Joanna. She can't know that Dean is her father. Dean's unreliable, I highly doubt he'll be a good father.
I still hate his guts. He's not going anywhere near her. It's hard to make certain even if he doesn't know. He travels from town to town, but he better not come near San Francisco. My daughter deserves better. I deserve better.
I'm a single woman with a 5 year old girl, so it's kind of hard to make sure Dean doesn't go near her or try to take her. I keep thinking that he somehow knew that I was pregnant and that he didn't want to take care of me.
I know what his family business is. I stumbled upon it in that month that we were together. He's got his dad's journal and countless other things to back my information up. He's a damn hunter. He hunts things. He saves people. But he doesn't have the balls to stay with me and raise our kid whether he knew or not.
I don't want Joanna to know about Dean because then she'll be exposed to all the crazy shit her father is mixed up in. I don't want to corrupt her. I don't cuss in front of her because I love her too much to let her be exposed to such language.
"Mommy, mommy. Look what I made in Ms. Janie's class today." Joanna said, running toward me with an arts-and-crafts project in hand. I smiled. It had two stick figures, a house and a puppy. I laughed.
"That's me, you, and our house. And a puppy." She said excitedly, pointing at each thing on the paper. "Is this your way of saying we need a puppy?" I asked curiously.
She nodded in excitement. I sighed. "Baby girl, you know it's a lot of responsibility to care for a puppy. You gotta feed em', wash em', play with em', walk em', and a bunch of other stuff. " I began explaining. She didn't seem to mind. "I know mommy, I can handle it." She said happily.
"Alright. You drive a hard bargain. What do you say we go to the adoption fair later today? On one condition. You gotta do your homework and help me make dinner." I said, feeling generous. Her face lit up so bright it nearly blinded me.
"Yes, of course Mommy. Anything you want. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" She exclaimed/ She jumped into my arms and I caught her. She hugged me tight and kissed my cheek several times. I laughed. "Okay. Okay. That's enough. Now let's get that dinner ready and your homework done, baby." I said to her while putting her down.
Joanna nodded and hopped to it. We made spaghetti and meatballs. She put pasta sauce on my face and giggled. Her laugh gets me through the day. I had to start thinking about her from the day that I found out I was pregnant. I had to be strong and keep my head held high, not thinking of the heartbreak I'd suffered.
I wiped it off with a finger and licked it. We ate our dinner and she helped me clean up. I read her short books for her reading assignment and helped her with her spelling homework. She's a really bright kid. I love her with my heart and soul and will do anything to see her smile.
We got dressed to go to the adoption fair in the park. I liked this new beginning. I have my heart and soul, Joanna, and this beautiful park within walking distance. I grabbed her by the hand and we walked out of the small 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house I bought when I sold my mom's place and began renting out the loft space above The Riptide. I locked it. We walked and she stayed close to me.
