*Joanna's POV*

Mommy had to run out for a moment. She told me not to open the door for strangers. She told me to not be close to the windows. She told me to stay with Max. I told her okay and she kissed my forehead. She said she'd be back really soon.

I was playing with Max in my room and then I heard a knock at the door. The door was locked and could only be unlocked by Mommy. Maybe it's the mailman.

I rushed over to the door, completely forgetting what Mommy told me. Max followed. I looked through the window by the door. This man didn't seem like a stranger, so I opened the door.

Wow. He's a pretty man. I love his eyes. They are just like mine.  He seems nice. He crouched down to my level. "Hi, sweetie. What's your name?" He asked kindly. Well, since he asked nicely. "I'm Joanna. I'm 5 years old. And this is Max, my guard puppy." I said. I say things too much. "Wow. 5 years old. That's a big number. You're a big girl." He said. He's silly. "Well, what are you standing there for? Come in!" I said happily.

I have a new friend now. He's a nice man. I hugged my puppy and sat down next to Max, criss-cross applesauce. Then nice man sat next to me with his knees spread apart and his arms connecting the two. He smiled at me. I smiled back.

"My name is Dean. Do you know where a lady named Anna is?" He asked me. "Anna? That's my mommy. She's really nice. Just like you." I said with my eyes lighting up. He looked surprised.

"Your mommy?" He asked. "Yeah. That's who you're here to see, right? Mister Dean" I asked. This man is really funny. "uh, yeah. " He said back.

"You know you have really pretty eyes, Joanna." He said to me. "Thank you, Mister." I said back. Uh oh. Busted. Mommy's home.

Mommy walked in. "Joanna? Go play in your room with Max. Now." She said, very loudly. I did as I was told.

I closed the door, but put my ear up to the door to listen in. I heard yelling. Mommy was yelling. "Get out, Dean. Now." She yelled. I don't like it when Mommy yells.

I wonder who that man really is, if my mommy doesn't want him in the house. He seems really nice. "I just wanted to check up on you, Anna. You have a daughter? How come you never told me?" That Dean man said.

It was quiet for a little while, then I heard that man talk again. "Is she.. Is she mine?" He asked mommy. I heard Mommy start to cry. I don't like it when she cries either. Is that man my daddy? I looked at Max. He barked at the door.

I let him out of the room. I looked through the small crack in the door that I made for the dog to leave. Mommy was crying into her hands. That man tried to help her, but she pushed him away. She was sitting on the couch and he sat next to her.

They didn't notice me walking out of my room and into the living room. I sat on the couch beside them. I just watched. This man. He is my daddy. I have a daddy now. But why did my mommy not tell me about him? Did he hurt her? I don't know if I like him anymore.

I climbed behind them and hugged them both. I don't know why I did that, but it felt right. "Are you my daddy?" I asked the man. "Yeah, sweetie. I am. You have an uncle too. He's around here somewhere. Right now, I think I need to leave you two alone." He said when he was getting up.

He started walking toward the door, but I ran to stop him. "You just got here, daddy. I've been waiting for you my whole life. Why are you leaving me again?" I asked him. "I'm not good for you, Joanna. I'm glad I got to see you before I left, though. " He said, trying to leave again. I ran and hugged him tightly.

He picked me up into his arms. I felt right being held by him. This is my daddy. I don't want him to go. He looked over at mommy and I did too. She made a face that made daddy want to leave. I don't know how else to describe it. I kissed Daddy's cheek and he put me down. I hugged him again beacause I didn't know if I was going to see him again. He patted my back.

I motioned for him to come closer so I could whisper to him. He bent down to listen. I put my the side of my hand to whisper into his ear. "I don't want you to leave, Daddy. But if Mommy wants you to go, I can't stop you. No matter how hard I try. " He looked at me sadly.

I could tell he didn't want to go either. But whatever mommy says, goes. He left. I waved to him from the window. He waved back. He got into a really cool car with another man that had really long hair. He looks cool too.

I walked over to Mommy and kissed her cheek. She smiled. Her cheek was wet from all the tears she cried. "Mommy, why were you yelling at Daddy? And why did you make him go away? Do you not love Daddy? Or does Daddy not love me?" I asked.

Mommy looked puzzled. "It's not like that, Jojo. Daddy did a lot of bad things in the past. He does a lot of scary things now. I just want you to be safe from all that. It's not good for you." She said. "But I still want Daddy. " I said with an attitude and stomped my foot. I don't like when good things are taken from me. I don't always throw temper tantrums, but this was an exception as they like to call it.

"Joanna Haventon, you will get rid of that attitude right now. I say and do the things I do, for you because I love you. I want to keep you safe from all of that. I did my homework on what exactly your daddy does. I know it's not good for you. Anything that I know is not good for you, I make sure you don't have to deal with it." She said loudly. She wasn't telling me everything. I know it.

"Okay, mommy. I'm sorry for getting an attitude with you. I love you." I said. This wasn't over. I'll see my daddy again. I believe it.

Everything I ever believed, happened. I believed I was going to have a happy life with Mommy, and I have that. I believed that I would get a puppy, and I have Max, who was licking my leg right now. I giggled. I believed that I had a daddy, even when mommy said I didn't have one, and I do have a daddy.

Mommy smiled at me and kissed my forehead. I hugged her tightly and kissed her cheek. Her cheek was dry now. No more tears.

Max jumped on us and licked both of our cheeks. We laughed. We pet him and he started shaking his leg when we got to his favorite scratching spot. I thought it was the funniest thing ever. I love my Max. I love my Mommy. I love my Daddy.
