Part Thirty Nine (Liam)

I finish ringing up the customer in front of me before wiping my hands on a dish towel. I pull out my phone to see if Louis has text me back but it's just my luck that he hasn't. We have been texting for quite some time now and it's been awesome. Now that I've gotten to know him, he is very genuine and quite funny. He's one of the best people I've ever had the pleasure of getting to know and I'm so glad we are now friends.

I check my phone once more before deciding to close up shop early. Business has skyrocketed so much lately that we had to start opening on Sundays by popular demand. The bakery could be closed for the rest of night, I figured, even if it was only quarter 'til 6.

Quickly turning the 'OPEN' sign to 'CLOSED,' I head out and begin my trek home. I take out my phone to send Louis a quick text when I see a small crowd up ahead about four blocks away.

"What the..." I mumble to myself. Curiosity gets the best of me as I near the crowd. People stare at me as I begin to push my way to the middle. As I begin to fight my way through, someone tugs on my arm. I trace the arm to the face and my jaw hits the ground.

"Z-Zayn?"

"Mate, you need to come with me," he breathes heavily, panic flooding his face.

"What are you doing here Zayn?" I ask completely ignoring his demand.

"We can talk about that later but right now," he looks over my shoulder before looking back at me, "you need to come with me. Now."

I narrow my eyes at him before taking a step back. He knows something that I don't know. I turn around just as the crowd opens. On the ground covered in blood is none other than Louis.

"Louis!" My body shuts down as I crash down next to him, immediately trying to pick him up as gently as I can.

"What happened?" I ask the strangers. They all stare dumbfounded as I search all of their eyes. One girl steps forward, she can't be more than 8 years old as she raises her head to speak.

"Someone ran their car into him," she whispers. My heart sinks to my stomach just as all the air esapes my lungs. No, this can't be. Not again.

"Someone ran him over?" I ask, still in denial. She only nods before she steps back to her original spot. I look down at Louis again who lays limp.

"Louis, say something. Say anything!" I beg, gently lifting his head. He lays there completely still, eyes shut.

"Come on mate, say something," I whisper. The people surrounding us just stare as I try to figure out what to do. I'm so caught up in the million and one thoughts running through my head that I don't hear Louis cough.

"Louis! Look at me, mate. Say anything. Do anything to let me know you can hear me."

He makes a noise that sounds like a muffled hum but it's enough for me.

"Someone call an ambulance!" I shout at no one in particular but one man actually does call and for that I am thankful.

"Hang in there Louis."

The ambulance arrives shortly after the call is made and they get Louis on the gurney and into the back of the ambulance with lightning speed. The paramedic asks if I want to come along too and I do so I go to get in as well, leaving Zayn along with the many other strangers in the street.

The hospital staff will only allow me to go so far with Louis but they promise me that he's in good hands and oddly enough, I believe them.

I take this time to ring Louis' dad and debrief him on what's happened. He says he's stuck in traffic but will be here as soon as he can. I wait and I wait some more. Hours pass and there isn't any news on Louis' condition. Louis' dad arrives just as the doctor that took in Louis comes out.
