The second exam period passed very satisfyingly. Studying for more than two months with Ghost, finally I knew most of the topics so I was more calm and confident compared to the first exam period. Still, this situation didn't prevent me from seeking Ghost's reassurance.

One day before the first exam, I sat on the rooftop, waiting for Ghost to come back home. When he came back, I told him that I was feeling anxious. He sighed and sat beside me, then he took out his famous post-its and a pen, and like the previous time, he scribbled something on it before sticking it on me.

I checked it and saw it was written 'eighty nine' on it. I gently took the paper off my coat as I was collecting those post-its in a box, saying "from seventy to eighty nine, I upgraded!"

He smiled back at me with a gentle gaze. It was one of those moments that I saw a bit of emotion under his friendly but yet coldish demeanour, it was definitely not the gaze of a normal friend... it was more like a lover's gaze but with Ghost, I could never be sure...

As this unclarity was killing me, I decided to take a huge step and confess my love explicitly. I even arranged the best day for it; Ghost's birthday which was one week later. Although I spent the entire week organising the perfect setting, that week felt like years... I also talked with my stepmom before they went to another state for a book fair for a week, and decided to throw a birthday party when they come back.

Being very excited for my first love confession, I couldn't sleep well a day before the birthday, but when I opened the door to go to school, I found a very happy Ghost. He was smiling very cutely and fidgeting on his stand with excitement.

My heart skipped a beat with the overloaded cuteness of my angel.

"You have some good news?" I asked, trying not to be very apparent with my drooling.

He nodded, "my uncle called me home for the evening," he beamed with happiness.

"Ah," I couldn't find words. What about my plan then? I quickly gave myself a mental slap, my plan could wait as long as Ghost was happy. I smiled back, "that's really nice, so you're gonna celebrate your birthday with them."

"For the first time yes!" he answered, "I'm surprised that they remembered this year."

For the first time? Really? What kind of bad people they were, upsetting my poor baby! My hands clenched around my bag. This celebration was better to be great otherwise I could snap that 'uncle's' neck.

The day dragged on and on and on... Luckily, Ghost was too excited to see my uneasiness. During the lunch break, I tried to act normal as possible, but the fear of my angel getting sad was killing me slowly.

We returned home together in silence after school, but when Ghost was about to leave, I grabbed his arm, saying "in case you need me, I am a call away from you. Remember that, okay?" My tone was dead serious but I couldn't help it.

He frowned but still nodded. Then he gently patted my hand and I had to let him go. Reluctantly.

My intuition was telling me that something bad was likely to happen...

After he left, I decorated my room with balloons and blinking lights; checked the chocolate cake and beers and placed the lighter, candles and the gift on the table for easy access. No matter how late he would return, I wanted to be the last person he was with on his birthday.

Unfortunately, all of these took only twenty minutes and then I was back to my anxiety, sitting on the sofa with geography notes which I didn't manage to read even a page.

6 pm... 7 pm... 8 pm... 9 pm... Ghost still didn't return. Was it that good of a party?

"Never mind, he can tell me if he is having fun," I murmured at the empty room and called him.

It rang... rang... rang... Finally, there was an answer!

"Why did you answer so late?" I couldn't help but snap at him.

"I..." a weak sound heard at the other end of the line, then just sobs.

A cold chill ran down my back, "Ghost where are you?" I asked with a hoarse voice. My whole body was shaking with anger.

"Play...ground," he managed to say in between his sobs, but it was enough for me.

"I'm coming," I grabbed my coat, a wool scarf and bike key before rushing out to the cold.
