What happens when two girls show up in an all boys Glade? Rae wakes up with no memory in a moving box next to a comatose girl. Between making friends and finding family, Rae is more important in the Maze Trials than she could ever realize.
"Rae, wake up!" I sat straight up, hitting my head with someone else's. rubbing my forehead I looked around. I was in the Homestead, someone must have taken me here last night. A collection of the boys were clustered around my bed, all having the same worried expression on their faces.
"You were sweating and thrashing in your sleep, you looked like you were having a stroke or something." Newt explained.
"I'm fine, I'm fine. Just a dream." I stepped out of my sleeping bag, the boys were still huddled around me, "Scram!" they looked away quickly and trudged off. I ran my fingers through my hair and pulled some knots out before braiding it. I followed some boys to Breakfast.
"Morning Fry." I said as he plopped some food on my plate. I went over and sat at an empty table. But soon enough Gally, Newt, Thomas, and Minho came and sat with me. We ate in silence until Newt told us we otta get to work. He took Thomas and I over to the gardens. I began pestering Newt with questions.
"Have you ever sent someone down in the box?
"Tried it, the box wouldn't move till we took him out."
"Have you lowered someone down?"
"Tried it. He got cut to pieces."
"Have you tried climbing up the wall?" at this Newt tensed up a bit.
"Tried it, vines don't go all the way up." "What about-"
"Tried it."
"But-"
"Tried it twice."
"But you-"
"Tried it! We have tried it all! The only way out is through the maze. Why don't you go get some fertilizer." Newt tossed a bucket at me. I caught it and went into the forest grumbling. I stopped at the Deadhead for a minuet, looking at the gravestones. I heard a branch snap and I whipped my head around. A boy was standing there, I think he was a runner.
"Oh, hi. I don't think I have met you. I'm Rae." I stuck my hand out. He took a step closer to me, sending chills down my spine. Suddenly he pulled out a knife and slashed at me, cutting a gash on my face. I screamed as I fell to the ground. Several birds flew away at this sound. The boy jumped on me, using his knees to pin my arms down. He held the knife against my neck.
"We're here because of you, love. Its your fault." He said in a deathly whisper. I struggled a little but stopped when he pressed the knife harder against my neck. I heard feet running through the trees and saw Thomas and Newt come into the clearing. The boy laughed, grabbing my hair and yanking me up, causing me to grunt in pain. Now we were standing, my back against his chest with the knife pushing against my throat. Newt held his arms out, as if calming a wild animal.
"Ben, Ben listen to me, don't do anything to her, Ben let her go." After he said this Gally came crashing through the trees but stopped short when he saw my situation. The boy laughed like a maniac again.
"Don't you see, it's her fault. It's all her fault. But, love, there is one thing that could make me forgive you. A pretty girl like you would love to join me in bed." All of the other boys flinched noticeably, "so what do you say love? You can give me a kiss or ill kill you." I struggled a bit more but gasped in pain as the knife cut into my neck.
"Go to hell." I said deathly calm.
"Oh no, love! That was not the right answer." He tutted, digging the knife into my neck a bit more. I heard a pang as his grip on me relaxes. I threw him off and saw an arrow lodged into his back. I looked up at Alby with a cross bow in his hands. Thomas ran to me and enveloped me in a hug. I put my head in the crook of his neck and maybe, just maybe let a few tears fall, but they were quickly wiped away. Newt and Gally looked at me with there eyes filled with concern. I looked down at the boy, Ben, lying on the ground.
"He's still alive, what are you going to do to him?" I looked up at Alby. His deep brown eyes studied me for a second.
"He will be banished." And with that he walked away.
"We better get you to the Med-Jacks. Gally, take him to the Slammer." Newt motioned at Ben. Gally's eyes were filled with hate as he looked down at him. Newt and Thomas ushered me back to the Homestead. I looked at Newt.
"What was wrong with him?"
"He was stung." Newt answered simply.
"Stung? By what?"
"Griever." He obviously didn't want to talk about it, so I didn't push it. As we neared the building Clint ran out to us.
"What the shuck happened to you? You look like klunk!"
"Ben attacked her." Newt answered. Clint ushered me to a bed and had me sit down. I winced as he put disinfectant on both of my cuts. He tapped some gauze on after putting a few stitches in. Both Thomas and Newt stayed the whole time looking very concerned.
"There ya go greenie." Clint helped me of the bed. I thanked him and then left the homestead. The boys were still following close behind me. That evening, before the doors closed everyone made there way over to them. All of the keepers were holding t shaped sticks. We all turned around when we heard Minho bringing a tied up, struggling Ben. He was pushed in front of the doors, surrounded by all of the boys. I stood a little ways back with Thomas and Chuck. As the doors started to close, the boys moved in with the sticks, forcing Ben into the maze. He screamed out for someone to help him. At this point Chuck walked away. I kept an emotionless face. After the doors had fully closed and Ben's screams were no longer heard, the boys stacked the sticks up along the wall. They all had pained expressions on their faces. Everyone headed to bed after that.
