In the Maze Runner series, the characters are often named after historical figures. For example Thomas is named after Thomas Edison, Newt after Issac Newton, and Gally after Galileo Galilei.
Rae is named after Walter Raleigh, he was born into a well-connected gentry family at Hayes Barton in Devon in around 1552. He attended Oxford University for a time, fought with the Huguenots in France and later studied law in London.
