Unstationed have to hunt for food, this normally occurs when the bloodbags go to The Unholy every fortnight. The day of the feeding, we go out in groups and ransack Stationed homes. This only works in some cases as some of the Stationed have realised that the Unstationed have been 'borrowing' some food.
We are obviously not the only Unstationed in The Inner. Despite popular belief, Unstationed know right from wrong. That doesn't always mean we do the right thing though. Each Unstationed group has their own sector. These sectors were decided by the leaders of all the groups.
Stay in your own sector.
That's the third rule.
If you cross over a different group's sector, that group has permission to do whatever they wanted with you. There is very few lone Unstationed, but in the case if there is one and they cross into your sector, they either join your group or get chucked to The Outer.
The Outer is the land outside The Inner's fence. It's home to rabid animals, Stationed and Unstationed rejects and The Infected. The Infected are once normal Stationed humans that were infected by QB7; a virus that makes you bloodlust. No one actually knows how the virus came to be. Let's just say if you come across an Infected; run like hell.
I've never personally come across one of The Infected, but I've never been sent to The Outer. You see, we can't always steal from the Stationed, sometimes we have to go into The Outer via underground tunnels to hunt the animals. It's dangerous, but it's what we do to survive.
At the moment, Lucian is getting ready to send us out to hunt. I'm going with him to some of the Stationed houses, where as Cynthia, Lennon and Gabriel are travelling to The Outer.
"It's still light, so don't worry about the bloodsuckers, but make sure you only go through these tunnels," Lucian instructs the three as they crowd around a roughly-drawn map.
"What do we do if one of The Infected spot us," Cynthia asks, pushing her long, blonde hair behind her ear as it falls in front of her face.
"You probably won't, but if you come across one, run. If it sees you, use your weapons. One Infected isn't that hard to kill, just don't touch it. One touch means that you're infected, that's how the virus is passed on," Lucian answers, his voice stern.
They all nod in unision, already geared up to go.
"Come back safe," Lucian calls as they retreat out of our wooden shack. The inside is quite nice, but on the outside, it just looks like a pile of sticks which is what we want.
I come out of the dark corner where I was watching from.
"I still don't understand why you never let me go out," I say softly as I go to stand behind him.
"You aren't ready, Valerie," Lucian answers, back to me as he looks at our wall of weapons. His diligent fingers pick up a selection of curved knives. Each of us have a preferred weapon. If you don't have a weapon, you're pretty much dead.
"Are you kidding? I wipe all of their asses in training! You know I'm ready, so what's the real reason you won't let me go?" I demand, pulling on my leather gloves.
Lucian finally turns to face me. His blonde hair is cut short and his deep blue eyes stare straight back into my grey ones. He's decked out in his gear, his jacket concealing the array of knives he had just chosen.
"You will be ready when I saw you're ready. Do you understand?" Lucian replies in a 'no nonsense' voice.
I nod mutely, picking up my katana from the wall. I put it in my sheath which is attached to my back. He nods at me once and we start to make our way out of the shack.
That's when we hear the first scream.

Double Update. So proud of myself XD
*not even slightly proof read*
I know the weapon choice is the same as Alison Sekemento from 'The Immortal Rules' trilogy by Julie Kagawa, but this is not a copy of that trilogy.
