As the words register in my brain, I turn to glare at Lucian.

"What?" I ask viciously even though I heard every stupid word that left his stupid mouth.

"I refuse to let you come with us," Lucian repeats, speaking as if I were a small child.

"I'm 18, not 10! You need all the help you can get, Lucian. I refuse to let you refuse to let me come. It may be your group, but that doesn't mean that every stupid command that leaves your mouth is always right!" I exclaim, throwing my hands up in the air for emphasis.

For the last 8 years, Lucian has trained me to be the best I can be with my weapon. You cannot predict when we could be ambushed by anything. Worst case scenario is a bloodsucker stumbling upon the shack and feeling like a snack.

Lucian sighs before saying, "You're right, not everything I say is right, but it has always kept us safe. This is my group, so you follow my rules and my commands. Understood?"

I sigh, nodding my head in defeat before walking outside the shack. Behind our shack, I found a hole. It was probably a trap once, but now I've expanded it so I can stand inside it. I've tied bits of leaves and other things to a net and laid it over the hiding place so no one finds it unless they drop into it.

Climbing down the side of the hole and sliding the net back over the entrance, I contemplate the argument that had just taken place. I was not a child anymore! I knew how to defend myself if necessary. I know what the dangers are and I know the risks I have to take to be Unstationed.

Yes, I've never come in contact with one of The Infected or an Unholy, but seriously it's not like I'm not experienced with fighting. Over the years, I've dealt with Sector Crossers, Lone Unstationed and curious Stationed. I haven't killed anyone, but I have dismembered important body parts and thrown them into The Outer.

You might think I'm a monster, I would probably agree with you. It's how I survive though. At least I don't drink blood from human slaves, then sit up in The Tower and bathe in riches. That's what the Unholy do apparently.

The Tower is a massive- you guessed it- tower that sits in the very centre of The Inner. The Tower is home to the vampires obviously and is surrounded by a tall fence with barbed wires. It's guarded by Stationed soldiers- what we call The Favoured.

The Favoured are specially picked by The Unholy to guard them. Some of the elder bloodsuckers have personal guards, but you only see The Favoured when they come to collect the Stationed for the bloodsuckers. The Favoured are taken rather well care of and have a small village inside the fence that surround The Tower.

I sit in my hiding place, playing with my katana until I hear voices outside the shack. Lucian's in particular.

"Where's Valerie?" I hear Lucian ask.

"Probably in her hole," one of the boys answer, the voice muffled because of the net.

I assume Lucian nods as their footsteps start in the direction of Tunnel C. Sheathing my katana, I scurry up the side of the hole, carefully laying the net back on top. Peering out from behind the shack, I can see the feint outline of the 3 men.

I walk behind them, silent. I hide behind trees though, in case someone turns around and spots me. That wouldn't be good. Walking along, I realise it's gotten darker.

Don't go out at night without someone else and a weapon, better yet just don't go out at night. The bloodsuckers will be out by now and just because I haven't come across one before, doesn't mean I won't. I hurry a little more, getting closer to the three.

I'm surprised they haven't heard me yet, I thought they were supposed to be more vigilant. Obviously not. Finally, we reach the entrance to the tunnel. I watch from behind a tree a few metres away as Gabriel pushes back the metal circle and the three brandish their weapons, awaiting for something to pop up.

A few moments pass and I see all three of them visibly relax. Bad idea. Suddenly, Infected appear out of the hole faster than I can imagine. At least I assume their Infected. Their eyes appear to be black holes, a glint of crazy appearing. Their teeth are sharp and vile looking as they hiss at the men. Their skin saggy and yellowing. Hunched over, they look like no threat.

Lucian is the first to initiate the attack, swiftly throwing 2 knifes, hitting 2 of the Infected dead in the heart. They fall to the ground, black blood oozing from the injuries. This starts an uproar of hissing and angry shouting as the Infected come forward, reaching for the men.

I stay pressed behind the tree, unsure of what to do. They keep coming from the entrance of the hole, there's too many. A cry rings out and my head snaps to see Gabriel falling forward, a sword pushed through his heart. His own sword.

Lucian runs over to him, but it's too late. He's gone. Lucian yells a battle cry, a vicious look in his eye. Throwing knives so fast, it's like a whirlwind of metal. I look around, looking for Lennon only to not see him anywhere.

My focus turns back on Lucian as I watch Infected overpower him. They leave him, a mangle of skin and blood laying on the ground. I gasp in horror, gaining the attention of the last 9 Infected standing. They shoot me sinister smiles before stalking over to me.

I can't move, I'm paralysed in fear. They are a few metres away from me when I start screaming. They hissed again, charging at me, weapons raised. I close my eyes and wait for the impact to come, but it never does. I hear a whoosh and a person lands in front of me, his fangs bared.

The Infected squeal before retreating back to the entrance of the tunnel, away from the tall, slender and pale man standing in front of me. I stare at him as he turns around, surveying the mass of bloodied bodies; graced in both red and black blood.

I regain motion in my legs and without a second glance to the man who saved my life, I run over to Lucian's mangled body.

"Lucian! Wake up, wake up!" I shout at him, tears filling my eyes. A cold hand touches my shoulder and I immediately shudder.

"He's dead," I hear a strong, manly voice say and I assume it's the man. Turning around, I study the man who saved me. His face was pale, black hair falling over his forehead. His eyes were blue with a ring of red around them. He was tall, taller than me anyway and wearing a black cloak. As he opened his mouth to speak, I take notice once again of his fangs. His fangs.

"Bloodsucker," I say out loud, his features finally registering in my mind.

He chuckles a deep laugh, a playful smile gracing his face.

"I'm pretty sure that we are referred to as Unholy, but bloodsucker is a rather good description. I thought you would be more polite though I technically did just save your life," He answers," Speaking of which, aren't you supposed to be screaming and running?"

I nod, but stay rooted to the spot, my katana hanging in my hand.

"I should be, but I'm not. Shouldn't you be eating me?" Was my smart reply as the vampires smile widens.

"Oh, I like you. I've been looking for another heir and hey, you'll do," the vampire says, making me even more confused. I start to slowly back away, until he reaches out and grabs my arm in a vice grip.

"You have a choice here, little one. You either run and I feed you to the Infected down there," he whispers in my ear, nodding at the entrance to the tunnel."Or I turn you."
