Chapter 3: Another One Down

The screams echo, high pitched and seemingly endless as I rush behind Lucian.

"Go back!" Lucian orders me, still sprinting towards the tunnel entrance.

I ignore the order, still running behind Lucian. The screams get louder as we approach the entrance; a hole in the ground that is covered by a metal circle that is topped with grass so it camouflages. We don't want one of the Stationed to stumble upon it and have an adventure.

An adventure to their deaths.

The screams abruptly cut off and I can hear the sound of footsteps and shouts coming from the hole. Lucian and I stand on either side of the hole, looking down into it's dark depths. The sound of fast footsteps is getting louder so I presume who ever is running is getting closer.

Another shout rings out, a voice I recognise. The ring of metal is heard as someone clambers up the ladder attached to the side of the entrance. Lucian and I brandish our weapons as a head pops up and then another.

Lennon and Gabriel.

"Shut the entrance!" Lennon shouts as we hear sounds of more feet running towards us.

Lucian quickly shoves the metal circle over the entrance of the hole, no doubt plunging whoever, whatever down there into darkness.

"They were..right...behind us. They...surprised us...Cynthia didn't...realise until...too late," Gabriel pants, his hands on his knees as he bends over, trying to regain his breath.

"The screams we heard were Cynthia's?" I question the two boys, my voice low.

They nod mutely at me, their blood streaked faces showing signs of remorse. Lucian sighs, shaking his head as he starts walking back towards our shack.

"We'll sort food out tomorrow, we have enough to last us tonight. You both can explain what happened once we get back to the shack," Lucian calls over his shoulder, his voice portraying no hints of what he's feeling right now.

Cynthia was our newest member, her parents and brother also taken by The Unholy. I found her in a hole, crying and dirty. She was only a year older than me, yet we were all quite protective of her.

We walk silently towards the shack, the only sounds heard were the soft thuds of our shoes hitting the thin dirt path and Lennon and Gabriel's sharp intakes of breath.

Jogging slightly ahead of the 2 blood splattered boys, I start walking alongside Lucian, glancing around at the tall trees that separate us from one of the Stationed villages.

"I told you to go back," Lucian mutters, not bothering to turn his head to look at me. My head snaps towards him as I glare fiercely at him.

"And I didn't listen. What if whatever was down there got out? You could of been over-powered easily," I snap, turning back towards the path.

Lucian sighs and we walk along until we come across our shack. We walk- or in the boys' cases stumble- through the doorway, sitting down on the wooden stumps that we use for chairs.

"Explain," Lucian demands, resting his muscled arms on his knees as he watches Lennon and Gabriel squirm under his gaze.

"We followed the map, along Sector C and then down to the left. We were ambushed though, a whole lot of Infected were waiting for us. It was too late to save Cynthia, they tore her apart. We ran as fast as we could, there was too many," Lennon explains, quieting his voice as he spoke about how Cynthia had died.

Lucian stands up abruptly, sighing heavily.

"They may be infected, but they aren't stupid. We'll have to go finish them off later. How many was there?" Lucian asks, his eyebrow raised.

"Around 10," Gabriel answers, wiping the blood of his face with a damp piece of cloth, Lennon mimicking his actions as they await Lucian's reaction.

"Okay, get cleaned up. We leave in half an hour," Lucian orders.

They nod in answer, then go off their separate ways, still scrubbing at their skin. I go to head off too until Lucian's voice stops me.

"Valerie Cross, I forbid you from coming."
