ACT 1 SCENE 9

1260 B.C

"The Grey-eyed one!"

Their hushed whispers were awed and full of reverence.

She gripped her bow tightly.

'Lady Athena...', 'Daughter of Ares...', 'Child of the Gods'

If only they knew how wrong they were...

So, so wrong...

"Prepare my chariot", she said, giving a dismissive wave of her hand to the attendant.

Diomedes, Ajax, Patroclus...

1, 2, 3, shoot...

They had all fallen down...

One by one...

She swallowed, her long forgotten oath to avenge her mother rose up in her mind, clouding all thought.

"My lady", her attendant whispered, "Penthesilea will ride out to battle today. She will face Achilles"

"Let her try", she said bitterly, "She has long signed Hades' warrant"

"What about you my lady? She will die a martyr and be reunited with her beloved sister once more. But you shall get nothing. Priam will see to that", her attendant pressed, apparently wishing to meet the sharp end of her blade.

"Let her get the glory", she repeated, "this war is a sham. A pathetic excuse for lord Ares to have his fun. How many million people have suffered for Paris' wench? Her external beauty is a poor shield for her ugly heart. Let them all get the glory. I shall get revenge. Because that is what this war is. A thousand children pretending to be men"

Her attendant shrank back at the venom in her voice, trembling in fear.

"Let them get the glory", she whispered.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Lyssandra, do you know why we have summoned your soul?" the king of the gods asked.

"So that my mortal body be burnt by your weak son, who extracted a promise of victory from you", the answer rolled off her tongue.

"You would do well to remember your place", Dionysus said, shifting in his throne.

"How dare you!" Zeus roared, "You have committed treason! You picked the wrong battle. And now you shall pay"

"The same way Lady Penthesilea paid perhaps?" she asked, her face remaining impassive, "I have always wished to visit Elysium"

Zeus was progressively turning interesting shades of red. He burst into a roar of anger.

"SILENCE!! Daughter of Nyx, you have insulted me in my own hall. You have committed treason of the highest order by siding with the Trojans. Now, Troy is razed. Who will you run to?"

"No one, Oh great king", she said mockingly, "Perhaps you forget, but none of your blood runs within me. Hence, I am no coward"

"Eternal punishment", Zeus said, his voice barely raised above a whisper, hatred evident in his eyes, "May your dark powers be forever trapped alongside your spirit; deep in Tartarus"

"If it is to be", she said, shutting her eyes, "forgive me mother, for I have failed you..."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The eight gods stared at one another.

"She was a warrior", Artemis said, "she deserves to be treated as such. Father would do well to remember our customs"

"She is far too powerful for her own good", Athena said, "but divine order decrees that we must preserve her. A thousand years from now, or perhaps ten thousand, the daughter of Nyx will live once more"

Apollo cupped his hands near his mouth and whispered the divine words that would drain the struggling spirit within of its incredible power, leaving behind not even a drop.

"Roam among the stars", Hades whispered, staring at the sky, "for that shall be your home for the centuries to come"

The eight gods stared at one another once more.

"Lyssandra, daughter of the night, will rise once more", Persephone said, resting her palm on a nearby tree trunk, "will she remember what she once was?"

"Nay", said Hermes, "the spell is too powerful for that. She will slumber and wake only when we cast a counter spell. But that will take cataclysmic energy. She may as well be dead"

"She will glean knowledge of the eons to come from her brethren, the stars", Athena said, "and yet, she will be none the wiser. She will do well to remember us and the good we have done her. Else, nothing will spare us from her wrath once she wakes. And she WILL wake. One day"

Endless excruciating pain. A dormant life was not one this spirit was meant to live.

Unbeknownst to the gods, a vestige of her power remained. A bare thread to connect her to her former glory.

She, Lyssandra, daughter of the night, keeper of the shadows, and bane of Olympus, would wake. And when she did...sweet, glorious revenge.
