Act 2 Chapter 8

The Centurions watched in silence as their praetor paced back and forth like a caged tiger. Finally, Allison, a daughter of Ceres, spoke up.

"Umm...Praetor?" she spoke up timidly, "You said there was an urgent matter you wanted to speak about?"

Reyna raised her head to meet their eyes, face icy cold.

"Faith", she said, her voice sounding strained and tired.

The daughter of Hecate in question stared at her impassively.

"Tell me", Reyna continued, "How many kids of Hecate are at camp currently?"

"Just me and Alex", Faith said unsurely, furrowing her brows.

"And how many campers at Camp Half Blood are children of Hecate?"

"Six or so", Faith said, looking down at the table, picking at her fingers nervously, "But that makes sense. We suffered the most loss in the course of the last two wars"

Reyna gave out a bitter laugh. The Centurions glanced at each other uneasily. Their Praetor sounded unhinged.

"See? That's where we were all wrong. According to these reports from the amazons and the hunters, the number of children of Hecate in their ranks have started falling rapidly. Only yesterday, a satyr was arriving with two new demigods; a son of Mars and a son of Hecate. Unfortunately, they were attacked on the way", Reyna paused, studying all of their faces, "Here's the weird thing: Both the satyr and the son of Mars were spared. But the son of Hecate was abducted by a masked attacker. The satyr reported that the attacker had almost divine strength, and the amazons have reported that some of their troops were attacked by masked invaders as well. None of them survived"

A silence fell upon them all.

"My mother", Faith began, "wouldn't just let someone carry off her remaining offsprings. She already grieves the deaths of too many of us. She would do everything in her power to keep us safe"

"That", Reyna said, "is the point. Whatever this was...it was beyond the powers of the Goddess of Magic herself"

Sienna yawned, staring at the practice dummies without actually seeing. Gods, it had been ages since she'd had a good night's rest. And it was starting to show.

She had briefly considered coming clean to her family, but then she remembered everything her parents had gone through when they were her age. There was no point in worrying them about nightmares when they'd had more than their fair share. All demigods went through this and she had to just tough it out.

Another monstrous yawn changed her mind. She wearily trudged towards the Hypnos cabin. Hopefully they would have a potion or something to give her a dreamless sleep.

"Hello?" she called out. The cabin was uncharacteristically empty.

Where was everyone?

She stepped in and was instantly hit by the urge to just crawl into one of the comfortable looking bunks and sleep forever.
