"We're approaching the border," North said quietly.
"Yeah." Both of North's hands were firmly on the steering wheel, but Y/N kept her hand on his thigh.
"Y/N-" North sucked in a breath. "I have to tell you something."
His voice was solemn, and immediately a hot ball of anxiety bloomed in her stomach.
"W-What is it?" She could feel her heart climbing up her throat, choking her.
The country's hands tightened on the wheel. "Either way that this ends, I won't be walking away."
"Don't say that!" Y/N was startled. That wasn't like North Korea at all.
North Hamgyong had once told her 'Korea is too optimistic.' She hadn't understood it at the time, but now she did.
North always thought that he could win. He never said otherwise.
So what was this?
"It's true." North's voice was grim, and he refused to make eye contact with her.
"Yes you will-"
"No. I won't." He took a tight breath. "I'm going to win this. I'll rescue South Hwanghae. But if I win, I'm not coming back."
"Please tell me what you mean," Y/N begged, twisting in her seat to look at him. It felt like her throat was closing up. "Please."
North closed his eye for a brief moment, before focusing it back on the road. "When I win, I'm going to become Korea."
"But... you're already Korea." Y/N was lost. What did he mean?
North growled angrily. "Don't you get it? My brother and I were split- no matter who wins, we will be becoming whole. Like... Israel-Palestine."
The realisation struck the girl like a bus. Thoughts of the Soviet republic clawing at himself, holding his head in pain, the blood that leaked from his golden skin as he tried to stop himself from killing her, flashed through Y/N's mind.
"No," she whispered. "No. Can't you just... not do it? Please."
"I want to." North spoke in a low tone. "I've felt this ache as long as I have been alive. My brother and I are meant to be one. That is what the Reunification is all about."
Y/N felt tears starting to well up in her eyes. "Why didn't you tell me this before?"
The country slapped the steering wheel with the palm of his hand. "I wanted to, but I couldn't. You would have tried to convince me not to. And it's what's best for our people."
"And what if you- what if you just gave up on the Reunification?" Y/N asked desperately, eyes stinging. "What if you just killed him?"
North was silent for a moment. "Then I would live."
"Then just do that!" She knew that she was being selfish by asking him to do this, but she couldn't help it- she couldn't lose him.
"I can't. I'm not- I'm not ready to kill my brother." His voice was tight as he finally admitted it.
"Yes you can! Please North, I just- I can't-" Y/N was sobbing now, and her voice broke. "I can't lose you."
"I'm sorry." The Countryhuman's good eye was not on the side that she could see, but North's voice was shaking enough that she knew that he was crying, something that she had only ever seen once before.
