The One Where Umbridge Is Annoying.
Defense Against the Dark Art class with the Slytherins and Ravenclaws was always an entertaining class, with it almost being a race which house could answer the question first. It was in that class where the house stereotypes really showed, with the Ravenclaws determined to show off their knowledge and the Slytherins too prideful to let them answer each and every question.
But this competition soon ended when the class got their new teacher. Professor Umbridge was one of the most annoying people Kayla had ever come into contact with. Her only interests seemed to be boring students, wearing pink and being a bitch (Jade added that one in.)
"I'll see you after class if we all don't die of boredom," Kayla said before pushing her self off Claire's desk, which is where she had been leaning. She slid into the desk to Miles, but he was too busy speaking to the girl seated behind him to notice her. Kayla leaned back in her chair and glanced around the room. Umbridge would be here any minute, but Kayla had planned to spend those minutes speaking with Miles but he was obviously already occupied.
Kayla made eye-contact with Jane Selwyn who was seated across the room. The dark-haired girl's eyes flickered to Miles, and Kayla sent her a dirty look. When would she just let go of Miles? They've been broken up for years.
As Umbridge walked into the room, any voices speaking were silenced. Miles turned back to face the front of the class. He glanced at Kayla but didn't show any emotion.
"Wands away," Umbridge sang. Kayla sighed-as did many students-and shoved her wand into her rucksack. Umbridge never taught them anything useful in this class; Kayla tried to hide the annoyance present in her features.
"And where is your wand?" Umbridge asked, tapping on Claire's desk. Kayla could see her soft-spoken friend tense up from where she was seated.
"I-uh-I forgot it," Claire stuttered.
"You forgot it?" Umbridge repeated.
"Yes Professor," Claire said. "I think I forgot to put it in my bag this morning. It should be in my dorm-"
"And why would you forget to put it in your bag?" Umbridge interrupted Claire. Her tongue darted out to moisten her lips, and Kayla finally understood why people claimed she resembled a toad.
"I didn't mean to," Claire squeaked. Kayla could only see the back of her strawberry blonde head, but she suspected Claire's face was bright red.
Umbridge tutted and shook her head. "What if you needed your wand for this class?"
Claire tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and Kayla saw that it had, in fact, gone pink. "We never use our wands, so I-I thought it wouldn't be an issue-"
"But what if today was the day I requested you used them?" Umbridge asked. She tilted her head to one side and raised her eyebrows, staring at Claire. "That's very irresponsible of you."
"I'm sorry professor," Claire choked and Kayla knew that as a sign she was about to cry. "It wont happen again."
Claire adverted her eyes to her desk, clearly hoping Umbridge would take the opportunity to walk away. Kayla's jaw clenched as the lady tapped on Claire's desk once again.
"What's your name?" Umbridge asked.
Claire lifted her head slowly. "Claire. Claire Montgomery."
"You're sisters with Cassidy Montgomery?" Umbridge asked and when Claire nodded, she continued. "She's a Hufflepuff?"
"Yes Miss," Claire breathed.
"I've had a bit of trouble with her," Umbridge said as if it was Claire's fault. "She's a detention with me this evening. I must say, I would've expected you to be a Hufflepuff and your sister a Slytherin. But I suppose you can't argue with the sorting hat."
Claire nodded quickly, although Kayla was clueless as to what she was agreeing with.
"You were sorted, correct?" Umbridge asked with a furrowed brow. "Slytherin's are usually quite on top of things. Forgetting their school supplies is quite-"
"Oh would you just leave her alone?" The words escaped Kayla's lips before she could stop them. A few heads turned to look at her but Kayla kept her eyes on Umbridge.
"Excuse me?" Umbridge asked, lifting her hand to her chest.
"I said leave her alone," Kayla said. "You can see she's uncomfortable. So drop it!"
"I do believe I'm the teacher here, Miss Malfoy," Umbridge smiled smugly. "I can do what I like."
"Yes, you're a bloody professor. Not a bullying student," Kayla spat. "Just because you're a teacher doesn't mean you can treat students like shit."
A couple students let out little gasps of surprise and some even chuckled. Umbridge's smile was wiped off her face and she looked ready to attack. "I would advise you to shut your mouth, Miss Malfoy."
Kayla scoffed. "What are you going to do? Advada Kedavra me? Throw me in Askaban?"
"No but I will give you detention," Umbridge said, the sickening smile returning to her face. "My office. Tomorrow night. 7 o'clock."
"I stuck up for my friend. I don't deserve a detention," Kayla argued. "I refuse."
Umbridge let out an ugly laugh. "You will do as I say, Miss Malfoy. I do have good ties with the ministry. You don't want to get on my bad side."
Kayla's mouth dropped open. Was that a bloody threat?
She was about to retort but Umbridge had already turned her back on her and was returning to her desk, calling out the page number they would have to read. Kayla crossed her arms over her chest and refused to open her book. It almost annoyed her more when Umbridge didn't call her out on it.
Once class was dismissed, Kayla shoved her book into her bag and left the room, feeling the need to explode when Umbridge reminded her of her detention.
"Kayla wait," came a voice behind her. Kayla turned and expected to see one of her friends, but it was Jane who had followed her.
"I don't want to talk to you right now," Kayla groaned.
"I just need to tell you-"
"No Selwyn," Kayla pressed. "I'm really not in the mood."
And Kayla stormed off, absolutely fuming.
