The One With The New Seating Plan

Kayla arrived at the Charms classroom just as the professor began speaking. Luckily, Professor Flitwick didn't comment on her time management and simply waved his hand at her, gesturing for her to hurry into her seat. Kayla did so without complaint, slipping into her chair next to Claire, with whom she shared a table with.

"I didn't miss anything, did I?" Kayla asked in a whisper.

Claire smiled and shook her head. "The lesson hasn't even started. But you did miss Cassius Warrington being pranked before Flitwick arrived."

Kayla let out a sound of amusement and turned her attention to Cassius, who was seated next to Miles with a very irritated look on his face and a single feather in his shoulder, which he didn't seem to notice. Both Slytherins were staring intently at Fred and Lee, who were laughing viscously, hands clamped over their mouths.

"I put together a new seating plan," Flitwick announced. "For a bit of a change of scenery for you all."

A couple students groaned, probably because chances were, a couple Slytherins and Gryffindors would have to share a table for the next few months. Flitwick didn't seem to notice the complaint, for he pulled out a bit of parchment and began reading off the names of students.

"Adrian Puecy and Kenneth Towler, you're up the front. Lee Jordan and Angelina Johnson, you two are at the desk closest to he door," Flitwick said, keeping his eyes on the parchment but pointing to where the students had to go. "Claire Montgomery and Miles Bletchley are at the real back desk. Kayla Malfoy, you're beside the window with Fred Weasley-"

Claire's head snapped around to look at Kayla once Flitwick announced she'd be seated next to a Gryffindor. Claire was fairly surprised when Kayla calmly stood from her chair and moved towards her new seat.

Kayla sat alone for a few moments and did not look to see what was taking Fred so long. Instead, she looked out the window she knew she'd be gazing out off during many future classes. Due to them being in one of Hogwarts towers and the approaching Christmas season, a thin layer of frost outlined the window and Kayla knew the glass would be cold if she touched it.

"Well hello neighbor," Fred mused as he sat down next to Kayla. The girl sent him a look and gave her attention to Flitwick, who was beginning the lessons. Fred chuckled and leaned back in his chair. "Right. Secret friends. I forgot."

Kayla resisted the urge to remind him that they were not friends.

"Now, the Drought Charm isn't strong enough to dry up, for example, The Black Lake," Flitwick chuckled to himself. "But it will dry up puddles and small ponds. You can all conjure up your own puddles, since we learnt Agumenti last year."

Flitwick waves his little hands in the air, indicating for the class to get going with their spells. Kayla silently made a puddle of water appear on her desk; Fred did the same beside her.

Kayla focused on the spell and wand movement (down before curving up). She couldn't concentrate fully, however, since Fred was violently waving his wand up and down.

"You're distracting me!" Kayla hissed at him. Fred raised his eyebrows at her, continuing to move his wand up and down quickly.

"I didn't say anything," Fred said. "You're the one distracting me. I'm very focused on my charms work."

"You're not even doing it right," Kayla complained, nodding her head at his wand. "You're preforming a spell, not slicing a piece of meat."

Fred smirked. "Well, your wand movement doesn't seem to be working very well either," Fred pointed out, dipping his finger into the puddle in front of Kayla.

"That's because you're distracting me!" Kayla groaned, her eyes on Fred's wand. "Ugh, would you stop?"

Kayla grabbed onto Fred's wrist, forcing his movements to halt. "You're supposed to do this," she spat, moving his wand in the correct way.

Fred was still smirking. "You should be a Professor," he commented. "You're quite good at this."

"No!" Kayla said. "You just have no common sense."

Fred whistled. "Oh. She's feisty today."

"Shut up," Kayla muttered, casting her spell correctly now that Fred had stopped annoying her.

The class continued with many cheeky comments from Fred and harsh responses from Kayla. Although he annoyed the hell out of her, Kayla couldn't stop the minuscule liking that she was starting to feel for him. Class ended and to show that they were in fact not friends, Kayla didn't wait for him to pack up.

"How'd you find the class?" Kayla asked Claire as they walked out the door. "Well, you were beside Miles. So I guess it wasn't as annoying as mine was."

Claire looked at Kayla nervously. "Um- I need to tell you that Miles is-"

"Kayla," came the voice of Miles. Kayla turned to see her boyfriend completely red in the face. "Can I talk to you? Now."

Kayla glanced at Claire, who was avoiding her eyes. The shorter Slytherin walked away, leaving Kayla with her visibly upset boyfriend.

Kayla went to say something but Miles gripped onto her arm and pulled her down the corridor. They came to a stop once the charms classroom was out of sight, and Miles let go of Kayla.

"What the bloody hell was that?" Miles asked, spit landing on Kayla's cheek. "In class? With Weasley?"

Kayla raised her eyebrows at him. "What are you on about Miles?"

"You were talking to him! Like he was a friend! Or something more!" Miles yelled, breathing heavily. He stared at his girlfriend for a few moments before a look of realisation and disgust on his face. "Don't tell me. Are you sleeping with him?"

Kayla's mouth dropped open. "No! Miles I- why the bloody hell would you think that?"

"You two looked close. Cozy, even," Miles frowned. "And I had to sit and watch you! Do you have no shame?"

"I'm not sleeping with Weasley!" Kayla exclaimed. "Why are you so sure? I'm closer with Ben and you've never suspected anything with him!"

Miles chuckled but Kayla noticed it was dark and mocking. "You and Benjamin? Please, does Benjamin even like girls?"

"He does, I'll have you know!" Kayla said. She was unbelievably annoyed. How could Miles accuse her of something so terrible as cheating?

"You sure about that?" Miles asked, smirking. "Don't you think he has girlish tendencies? You must be blind, Benjamin's as straight as a galleon-"

"How dare you?!" Kayla blew up, pointing her finger at him. "How dare you talk about my friend like that?"

Miles held up his hands in defence. "I'm just being honest! And you know I'm right!"

Kayla felt like she was shaking in anger and after glancing at her hands, she realised she was. "Screw you, Miles. I can't believe you."

With that, Kayla turned on her heel and walked away from him. And Miles didn't call after her.
