The One With The Squad Meeting.
Kayla's wish for the Weasley twins and Lee Jordan to leave her alone seemed to have come true, since she hadn't spoken to them for a week after the quidditch match. Although, she did receive a couple glares from the twins, which made Kayla realised they were annoyed at her for what happen on the pitch. Kayla didn't care one bit though, George had beaten her brother senseless (he still had the marks) and Fred was basically the same person. So Kayla wanted nothing to do with either of them anymore.
"You seem distracted," Miles said while letting out a deep breath. His hand rested on Kayla's knee while she sat cross-legged on his bed. He had been in the middle of leaving a bruise on his girlfriend's neck when he noticed her zoning out.
"Sorry," Kayla smiled. "I just can't stop thinking about what happened to Draco. What if they go after him again?"
Miles clenched his jaw a couple times. "Your brother will be fine, Kayla."
"How do you know?" Kayla asked. "He couldn't even fight back-"
"Can we please stop talking about it?" Miles groaned. "I thought we were in the middle of something."
Kayla avoided her boyfriend's eyes, since it felt like they were burning into her. She wiped her tongue over her bottom lip and nodded slowly, which gave Miles the consent he needed to kiss her again.
Miles kissed her hard. When they had first started dating he had been quite shy around her, and it showed in his kiss. But as they neared their one year anniversary, Miles seemed to only kiss her with an overwhelming amount of passion. Kayla found it got kind of boring sometimes, but she'd never tell him that.
There was no such thing as a 'casual kiss' with Miles anymore. It was either a quick peck or a full-blown snogging session, which usually ended with Kayla telling him to get his hands out of her skirt.
"Miles no," Kayla whispered, pulling away as Miles hand travelled up her thigh.
"Why not?" he breathed. His forehead was pressed against Kayla's and she could feel his warm breath on her lips as he took deep breaths. "We've been together for a while now and I want to do this. Why don't you?"
"I have to go meet Jade," Kayla explained, using her friend as an excuse instead of telling him she just didn't want him like that. "I promised her."
"Bloody hell," Miles groaned and stood up from the bed, facing the window. "Who knew Jade would be the one to interrupt. She's never even done it, has she?"
"I think she has," Kayla defended softly, standing up and pulling at her skirt. "With girls."
Miles scoffed. "I don't think that counts," he said before kissing Kayla's lips. "Next time, okay? No distractions."
Kayla smiled nervously. "Um- yeah."
She left the boys dorm as quickly as she could without making it obvious. She passed a couple students but they didn't acknowledge her; Kayla was in Miles' dorm a lot.
Jade was in the common room when Kayla descended the stairs from the dorms. The tanned beauty smirked as Kayla approached her.
"Have fun?" Jade asked and giggled when Kayla flushed red.
"We didn't-" Kayla began but decided she didn't want to finish her sentence. "Let's go, shall we?"
Jade sniggered and they walked towards the exit, but were stopped by Jane Selwyn.
"Kayla Wait," the pale girl called, eyeing Jade's annoyed demeanour. "Can I talk to you for a second?"
"We're quite busy right now," Jade cut in.
"Yeah," Kayla agreed. "I don't want to talk to you right now, Selwyn."
Jane seemed to deflate at Kayla's use of her last name. She opened to her to speak again, but couldn't seem to find the words.
"We'll be going then," Jade sang, pulling Kayla out into the corridor.
Kayla thought about returning to the common room and letting Jane tell her whatever she needed to, but as Jade began ranting about how annoying the Selwyn girl was, Kayla decided she didn't really want to know.
Kayla and Jade arrived outside Umbridge's office and Kayla felt an urge to run as Jade knocked on the door. Umbridge answered almost immediately and Kayla avoided her eyes as they entered the office; she felt like she was back in detention again.
"Now that we're all here, the meeting may begin," Umbridge announced, clapping her small hands together.
Kayla noticed Draco standing in the corner of the room, his face still holding evidence of his beating. He sent her a little smile of acknowledgment, which Kayla replied.
Upon further inspection, Kayla realised that most of the students in the room were fifth years and friends of Draco. Cassius Warrington and Graham Montague were two other faces Kayla recognised from the Slytherin Quidditch team; she'd spoken to them a few times when she was with Miles. Another girl stood in the back of the room. Kayla didn't recognize her.
"Now, as you all know, I am Hogwarts High Inquisitor," Umbridge said cheerfully. "I have the authority to enforce some new rules, and I need your help to make sure none are broken."
Kayla was only half listening, for her eyes were glued to Umbridge's desk. Memories of getting her hand cut open flooded Kayla's mind, and she could've sworn she felt the pain in her hand once again.
"You will be required to patrol the corridors at night," Umbridge was saying when Kayla finally started paying attention. "And you have the power to take house points off misbehaving students."
Sounds of glee and disbelief filled the room at Umbridge's previous statement. Jade tugged on Kayla's arm to grab her attention.
"Now you can get back at those retched Weasleys," Jade exclaimed. "This is going to be so fun."
"Hush now," Umbridge said, but she was smiling. "I also have a strong suspicion that a student organisation has been put together, despite Education Decree 24 clearing saying that is forbidden. Whoever discovers this group will be warmly rewarded."
More gasps of approval filled the room but Umbridge called for silence immediately and ushered the students into a line. The Professor pinned a shiny silver badge on each of the students. Kayla felt a short stab of a needle as Umbridge attached the badge to her robes, and she had a feeling it was done on purpose.
Umbridge then explained who would be patrolling together and on what night but Kayla wasn't listening. She was examining her new badge, the I for Inquisitorial Squad gleamed proudly in the light. Kayla felt it looked tacky, but she seemed to be the only one. Other students were admiring the badge, Draco seemed to think it looked great next to his Prefect one.
"I can't wait to find that secret group," Jade exclaimed once they left Umbridge's office. "I bet it's stupid Potter who set it up."
"It's a pity we aren't patrolling together," Kayla said, but she felt as if Jade wasn't listening to her. She was inspecting the shiny silver like a magpie. "But I suppose it'll be fun. Being outside of the House after curfew."
"I've done that so many times," Jade chuckled.
Kayla only smiled in return.
