I have never been so lost in my life. How do you help someone when they are hurting so much? I feel so useless! I just stand there not knowing what to do.
“Kayla, what is going on?”
I didn’t even see her come out of her bedroom. I looked at her and tried not to cry.
“Let’s go to the kitchen so we don’t wake your father.”
I followed and sat at the bar while my mom busied herself making us a cup of tea.
“Ok now tell me what is going on. Why your brother sounds like he’s break something or hurting himself in the middle of the night. Also where have you two been all night. I knew you were going to a party tonight but you guys know to be home by midnight. It’s 5 o’clock in the morning.”
She finally looked at me and stopped what she was doing. I must have looked horrible because a look of motherly concern crossed her face.
“Skye is in the hospital. He was in a car accident.”
“Oh my God, is he alright? Was anyone hurt? Please tell me he wasn’t drinking.”
“He had been drinking and he hit a tree. Mom, he’s pretty bad. He had surgery on both his legs. The doctor said he should be able to walk again but not for a while.”
Tears started running down my cheeks. My mom came around the counter and wrapped her arms around me.
“I’m so sorry sweetheart.”
“But the scary part is he hasn’t woken up yet. They don’t know when he will wake up.”
“I can’t imagine what his parents are going through right now.”
“We stayed with him so they could go home and rest. They weren’t gone long and we came home when they got back.”
“Kelton doesn’t seem to be taking it well.”
“He feels responsible.”
“Was he?”
“No, well they got in some kind of argument at the party. I didn’t ask about the details.”
“Did he…make a move on Skye?”
Everything seemed to stop. I looked at my mother with shock.
“You mean you know?”
“Of course we know Kelton’s gay.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“We wanted him to come to us and tell us. We’re not stupid or blind. I have no problem with it but your dad had a harder time accepting it. We love both of you. I was afraid moving here Kelton would have trouble but you both seemed to fit right in with no problems.”
“He was uncertain at first, but then he met Skye.”
“Is Skye gay?”
“Yes, they’ve been seeing each other for months. But Skye isn’t out to anyone. I don’t even think he was comfortable with himself until Kelton showed up. I’ve watched them get close all school year.”
“I’m relieved to hear that. Now, all we know is something happened at the party and Skye is in the hospital and Kelton is tearing his room apart. Well he seems to have quieted down now so we should go back to bed. We will go to the hospital in the morning. There is nothing else we can do tonight.”
I agreed and went to lay down.
