incoming call from kenjirō shirabu.

pick up?

yes || no

kaiya smiled sleepily at her camera as shirabu came into focus in the dim lighting of his dorm. shirabu seemed to have an exasperated expression on his face, though it was hard for kaiya to make out any distinct features on his face in the dim light.

kaiya groaned in annoyance, shoving her head into the pillow as she tried to fall asleep, though still on call with shirabu.

"will you please go to sleep?"

this came from shirabu in a salty tone of voice, rolling his eyes at the camera as he stared at the shiratorizawa volleyball club manager with a raised eyebrow.

"i've been tryingggg."

kaiya couldn't help the small whine that came out at her words. she was desperate to get to sleep, because even if she didn't seem to sleep a whole lot, she did like it.

"not hard enough, apparently."

kaiya lifted her head up to look back at her phone, noting shirabu's raised eyebrow, replying back by shoving her face into her pillow yet again.

"shut up, kenjirō-kun. do you know
how hard it is to fall asleep without
hearing my sisters snores in my
ear?"

obvious irritation was showing through shirabu's tone of voice, doing nothing to help the girl fall asleep in the slightest.

"kaiya-chan, what are you saying?
you don't even sleep at home, you
sleep in the fucking dorms. how
the fuck do you hear your sisters
snores in your ear as you fall asleep
at night without her?"

lifting her head yet again so her voice wouldn't be muffled by her pillow, she glanced back at shirabu.

"we have nightly calls where we
both eventually fall asleep after
talking about our days. but
apparently karasuno had a long
day or they're at some camp or
something so kiyoko wasn't
able to call me tonight."

at kaiya's words, shirabu simply rolled his eyes, shifting to find a new position in his bed, picking his phone up so the camera was still pointed at his face.

"you're a grown fucking teen, learn
to fall asleep by yourself without
your sister."

eyebrow raised at shirabu's harsh comment, kaiya couldn't help but ask the first thing that came to mind.

"kenjirō-kun, why do you hate
me so much? "

rolling his eyes at kaiya's words, shirabu shook his head in annoyance.

"i don't hate you per say,,, there
are just things you do that tend
to annoy me..."

now he had gotten kaiya's attention. what sort of things did she do that annoyed him?

"such as?"

shirabu couldn't believe it. was she really this dense?

"bothering me when i'm trying
to go to sleep. forcing me to go
places with you that i don't
want to go. making me facetime
you when you know i hate
facetimes. there's more, would
you like me to continue?"

kaiya couldn't help but feel somewhat guilty. was being her friend really as much of a chore as it seemed?

"no, i get it,  fine, go to sleep,
kenjirō-kun, i'll fall asleep on
my own."

eyes wide open, shirabu shook his head.

"too late, i'm no longer tired."

kaiya rolled her eyes.

"no, i insist, go to bed. right now,
or else."

shirabu raised an eyebrow threateningly at kaiya, a dangerous look overcoming his face.

"did you just threaten me,
kaiya?"

this was something that caught kaiya off guard. she couldn't tell if she was frightened of this side of shirabu, or if this side of him caught her off guard. if she were being honest with herself, she hadn't really seen much of any side of shirabu, the only side of shirabu she had really seen being his usual facade, annoyed at the world.

"m- maybe? why? what're you
going to do about it?"

shirabu quirked an eyebrow curiously at the girl. rarely did she stutter or look caught off guard. she had one of three moods — for the most part — focused, happy or neutral. but rarely did she ever stutter or get caught off guard.

"we'll find out tomorrow, i
guess."

kaiya rolled her eyes at that. honestly, it wouldn't surprise her if shirabu forgot about this whole conversation by the time morning came around. it wasn't unlike him to zone out on things he and kaiya would talk about.

"yeah, yeah, whatever. just-
get to sleep, kenjirō-kun. i'll
probably stay up and watch
anime or something before
i fall asleep."

shirabu grunted in response, muttering something that sounded like "no, you're going to pull an all-nighter," under his breath, though kaiya couldn't be sure about it.

"whatever, just make sure
you actually get some sleep,
kaiya. we still have practice
tomorrow and you know
washijo-sensei will be furious
if you aren't there or it seems
like you're too tired, he'll make
practice worse for you. so
please, get some sleep."

kaiya eyed shirabu through the screen, eyes narrowing as she nodded her head.

"yeah, i will, don't worry.
and make sure you get
some sleep yourself.
goodnight, kenjirō-kun."

with a yawn, shirabu nodded and gave kaiya a good night, ending the call and immediately falling asleep. kaiya, on the other hand, pulled up a show on her computer as background noise, hoping to fall asleep to the noise.

it took a few shows, but eventually kaiya was able to fall asleep, the clock showing the time as 4:12 am, and she had to get up before 10 am for practice at 11 am, to give her time to eat and get ready for the day, after all, she couldn't very well go to practice without putting her usual makeup on, not when she knew she looked...let's just say, she looked different without makeup.

4:12 am to 10 am, that gave kaiya a good 5 hours and 48 minutes of sleep, something shirabu would be half satisfied with. but hey, it was better than nothing.
