"guys, come on, this is getting ridiculous," kawanishi hissed at the pair as he, shirabu, and kaiya were eating lunch, shirabu and kaiya having been tricked into eating lunch with kawanishi.
kawanishi had asked them to eat lunch with him separately, both were told the other wouldn't be eating lunch with them, so both had readily agreed. despite the fact that shirabu and kaiya weren't talking, they had both missed the middle blocker.
kawanishi had been so fed up with their ignoring each other that he started to avoid the pair, often asking to stay with someone else at night so he wouldn't have to go back to the dorm he shared with shirabu.
it had been about a week since they'd started ignoring each other, only really acknowledging the others' presence during practice so as not to tip washijō off that something was wrong.
"tell that to her, she started it," shirabu muttered, coming up with the lamest excuse one could come up with.
"sorry, what? how did i start it? you're the one that kicked me out of the dorm after that conversation in the group chat," kaiya replied, eyebrow raised at shirabu.
"i did not, you just up and left," shirabu shot back.
"no, shirabu, she's right, although..." kawanishi trailed off, thinking back to the saturday they had spent together. "maybe it was a bit of both? i'm not entirely sure. all i really remember was you guys turning your phones off, glaring at each other, and then you guys probably said something to each other before kaiya got up abruptly and left? if i'm remembering correctly."
"shirabu said that he thought it would be best if i left so i did," kaiya replied with a shrug.
"yeah, as a joke. but when you stood up, i felt like you took it too seriously so i didn't bother stopping you." shirabu replied.
"dammit, guys, this was all a stupid misunderstanding? you idiots," kawanishi muttered, shaking his head at his friends.
"look, it's not like this is the first time something like this has happened. sometimes we end up taking each other too seriously, you know this about us, taichi-kun," kaiya muttered, glancing away from the pair of boys sitting across from her.
"god, the first time was a nightmare for kawanishi-kun to help us resolve. i still feel bad about that one," shirabu reminisced, a laugh escaping him.
"please don't remind me," kawanishi groaned, causing kaiya and shirabu to share a laugh at the miserable looking kawanishi.
"that was- that was definitely an experience, huh?" kaiya added, eyes twinkling as she, too, teased kawanishi.
"we only really became friends after the first interhigh prelims, right? we became friendly during the nationals tournament because you helped calm me down before the first game started," shirabu reminisced, glancing away to look out the window.
"you were a mess," kaiya laughed, reaching over the table to punch shirabu's shoulder lightly.
"hey, could you not bring that up?" shirabu muttered in embarrassment.
"why not? it was a bonding moment," kaiya replied, eyes sparkling in amusement. "you probably remember how much of a mess shirabu was, right, taichi-kun? or- nah, i think you were a mess as well," kaiya murmured thoughtfully. "you both were such messes, damn, good times."
