when morning came and kaiya was woken up by her alarm, she started to get ready, dressing in dark blue jeans, a black shirt and her volleyball club jacket, and then getting her makeup ready before heading to the dining hall to meet shirabu and kawanishi for breakfast.
upon entering the dining hall, she immediately spotted the pair, waving hastily at them before heading for the line of students waiting to get their breakfast.
she didn't get much, just a simple bowl of rice, something shirabu couldn't help but feel was too little food for the shiratorizawa volleyball manager. lately, kaiya had been eating less and less, and that worried shirabu to no end. and kawanishi, being shirabu's best friend, couldn't help but notice shirabu's constant worry for the girl, not that kaiya or shirabu himself noticed.
"so, what's on the agenda for today's practice, do you guys know?" kaiya questioned the volleyball players as she sat down across from the pair, picking up her chopsticks and starting to pick at her breakfast.
"not entirely sure, i think coach will have us do practice matches, but hopefully we won't have to do one hundred serves." kawanishi replied, shivering at the mere thought of serving a hundred times.
"oh god, please no. doing one hundred consecutive serves is so annoying," shirabu muttered, a dark looking coming over his face as he stared, with narrow eyes, down at his food.
"oh come on, kenjirō, it can't be that bad, can it?" kaiya questioned, smiling lightly at the setter in amusement.
"you wouldn't know, kaiya. riding the good life on the sidelines, simply taking notes on our plays and practices," shirabu replied, sending a glare to the girl sitting across from him.
"oh please, it's not as easy as you think. i can't take my eyes off of practice for a second or else coach washijō will yell at me," kaiya shot back, eyes narrowing at shirabu in return.
kawanishi simply looked between the pair, eyebrow raised as tendō walked up to the seated trio.
"what, exactly, is going on, kawanishi-kun?" tendō questioned, eyebrow raised — in amusement or curiosity, one couldn't tell — as he glanced between the setter and manager.
"i'm not entirely sure, they're arguing about who has the harder job, i think," kawanishi replied in a whisper, hoping not to disturb the duo that were glaring at each other.
"hmm," was all tendō responded with, glancing away from the trio towards the voice that had called out for him. "just a second, semi semi," tendō called, startling the glaring pair and causing kawanishi to flinch at the sudden noise next to his ear.
"uh, how long have you been standing there, tendō-senpai?" shirabu questioned, eyeing the middle blocker suspiciously.
"long enough to feel some sexual tension," tendō replied offhandedly, walking away from the table as he said it.
eyes widening at his words, kaiya immediately felt blood rush to her face in a blush. shirabu simply scowled at tendō's back, glaring at the red head as he walked away. kawanishi had turned his back to the pair, covering up his laughter with a cough, though it wasn't much of a cough and sounded more like he was dying.
"i'll- uh, i'll meet you guys there," kaiya muttered, picking up her half eaten breakfast and throwing it away. then she headed off after tendō and semi, heading for the volleyball gymnasium for practice.
"so, you like kaiya, don't you?" kawanishi mused as he and shirabu went to throw their own trash away, a bit behind kaiya.
"i- uh, i don't know what you're talking about," shirabu replied, looking away from kawanishi as he spoke.
"that isn't convincing," kawanishi replied with an eye roll. "c'mon, i'm your best friend, you can tell me anything."
"you're also kaiya's friend," shirabu mumbled, looking anywhere but at kawanishi.
"i'm her friend. i'm your best friend," kawanishi stated, trying to emphasize his point. "so let me ask this again. you like kaiya, don't you?"
"i don't know what you're talking about," shirabu replied, feigning ignorance yet again.
"c'mon, shirabu, i'm not blind. i've never seen you worry this much about how much someone eats until kaiya started eating less and less," kawanishi replied, glancing sideways at his friend.
at that, shirabu froze, turning towards kawanishi. "so you've noticed, too?" shirabu questioned, ignoring everything else kawanishi had said and focusing on how little kaiya had been eating recently.
"well yeah, we've all been friends since our first year, it's not hard to notice how little kaiya's been eating recently," kawanishi replied, hands behind his head as he walked alongside shirabu towards the volleyball team's gym.
the pair fell into a comfortable silence, both reflecting on their recent conversation, shirabu focusing more on why kaiya hadn't been eating much lately and kawanishi focusing on how shirabu had avoided his questions.
