Male International Airport, Maldives
22nd May 2018He watched her drag a brown luggage bag out of a car at the airport. She looked tired. She struggled against the sudden gush of wind that blew by her, effectively ruining her long brown her. He knew that she was about to roll her eyes and tie her hair into a pony tail. And after a minute, she did. He had become familiar with some of her habits over the last few days. He knew her. He finally knew her.
She had dark bags under her eyes and he instantly knew that she hadn’t slept last night. The reason was obvious. Her flight to Bombay was 5-hour long so he hoped that she’d get some sleep then. He moved a little closer towards the airport entryway to watch her. It was still a far distance but not a problem for him because of his enhanced vision.
She was moving slower than usual, falling a little behind, way behind her parents. Ahaan was animatedly talking to her and she was frequently smiling and nodding at him. But he knew that she had no idea what her brother was talking about. She was looking down at her phone, more often than usual and he sensed that she was waiting for something. Maybe a call from him? He saw her sigh and put her phone away into her shoulder bag. She looked up at the sky and watched an airplane soar into the clouds, leaving a white trail behind it.
He knew she was trying hard to distract herself. In an instant, he didn’t know what caused her to switch her gaze from the blue sky to the trees in the parking lot, as if she had sensed his presence. She squinted, looking hard at the same tree he was hiding behind. But he was too fast for a human eye to catch. He ducked behind the tree before she could see even a flash of him. He anyway had a peculiar talent for blending into the background until he wanted to be seen. She shook her head and looked down hopelessly when she didn’t find what she was looking for.
It broke his non-beating heart, to see her like that. She was wearing a black sleeveless top, blue denim jeans and a pair of tennis shoes. Her face was bare, not a hint of makeup on it. She looked devasted, but still beautiful. So, fucking beautiful. Her black almond-shaped eyes had flecks of golden in them. They had mesmerized him every time that he looked into those twin pools of black. Her dense eye lashes and plump lips always made him go crazy. A smooth olive skin tone, soft oval face, long chocolate brown wavy hair and tall, slender yet a slightly curvy body made her look like a goddess. Her voice was just as euphonious and her smile, well that made his dead heart flutter like a love-sick teenager, every single time.
But there was always this sorrow, a glimmer of brokenness behind her gorgeous exterior. He had always known that. Had she been as broken and lost as him? He always wondered to himself. He still remembered the first time he had laid eyes on her. Meeting her was fate, a coincidence he didn’t know he needed so bad. Coming to Maldives had been a random decision for him. He needed a break. He was bored and life in Covington had become too serious for his taste and there was nothing better than running off to Maldives. It was his favourite escape. But this time it was different. He had his mad urge to go there, he had no idea why. He just felt like something was calling to him. Now he knew why he had come to Maldives. It was predestined. It was for her. Always for her.
