TERRENCE was waiting inside Lola Victorina's house. In the living room, he kept on staring at the picture frame inside the glass cabinet as he tried to remember where he saw that face but his head would only end up aching.
"Terrence hijo."
He asked and smile.
Lola Victorina, Veronica's grandmother smiled and looked at the picture that Terrence was staring at. It was the 15 years old Veronica beside her.
Veronica was staring at the camera emotionless although she had lots of gifts in front of her.
"It was Veronica when she was 15, that was Christmas." Lola Victorina said, she was smiling to hide the sadness in her eyes.
The truth is, that same year was very traumatic for Veronica. She almost died in that fire accident 13 years ago. That day was very tragic. There were three children and two staff who died in the fire and a lot of them were hurt because it happened unexpectedly and when everyone was fast asleep.
Nang nalaman ni Victorina ang nangyari she immediately send someone to help and find Veronica secretly.
Her people did find Veronica and managed to save her but she already suffered a third-degree burn on the upper back of her body. Kung nahuli sila ng dating, it would be so much worse.
"Ilang beses ka ng nakapunta dito and that picture was always there pero ngayun mo lang napansin." Victorina chuckled and asked.
"What changed? You never paid attention to anything, especially if it is about my granddaughter."
Hindi niya din alam ang nangyari pero nang napansin niya ang litrato, it feels like he was forced to look at it.
Hindi na nakasagot si Terrence when a servant came. "Madam, handa na po ang pagkain."
"Keep it heated, we'll wait for Veronica."
"Opo Madam."
Victorina looked at Terrence. "Samahan mo muna ako hijo, may ibibigay ako."
Nang dumating sila sa kwarto, Victorina reached out the brown enevelope and give it to Terrence.
"Ano po to Lola?"
"That contained a confidential document about Veronica. I wanted to give you that personally kaya kita pinapunta dito sa Villa nang hindi kasama ang apo ko. Can I tell you something hijo?"
"Inside that envelope, there is also a document. It's the proof of the adoption."
Terrence gaped his mouth and looked at the documents. It was really the proof of adoption.
"Yes, Veronica is adopted. But that's not what I want you to know. Look at all the documents hijo."
Terrence looked at all the documents and was surprised. He then looked at Lola Victorina. "Alam po ba to ni Veronica?"
Victorina just shook her head and looked at the huge painting in the room. It was Veronica and her.
"Bakit hindi niyo po sabihin kay Veronica?"
Victorina did not answer. She just smiled sadly and stared at the big painting on the wall where Veronica was smiling sweetly while hugging her from behind.
