I woke up after Triston fell asleep to a slap in the face. "Frick," I muttered and squinted my eyes as the sun fled into them. Triston's hand was laying limp on my right cheek bone. I pinched his pajama sleeve and cautiously picked up his loose arm and set it on the mattress.
I attempted to fall asleep for more than 20 minutes, but the wind was pounding against my window like a hammer. I slumped down the stairs and stood on my tiptoes to reach the box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch on top of the fridge. I dumped a pile into a plastic orange bowl along with some skim milk.
"Hey Em. How did you sleep?" My mother asked as she sped around the kitchen.
"Um, it was okay. Triston had a nightmare about some wolves chasing him so he's asleep in my bed." I replied and rubbed my eyes.
"Oh, thanks for helping him. He's more than convinced that wolves are in our backyard." Mom rolled her eyes.
"How do you know?" I tilted my head to the left.
"Triston had this long talk with me about how they were going to hurt Zeek and Malachi. He thinks he saw something move behind a bush while he was in the sandbox a few days ago."
"Zeek and Malachi are tiny dogs. They'd outrun the wolves-if there were any." I laughed.
"Could you feed the dogs, please?" My mom asked as she turned on the faucet to wash the dishes.
"Yeah." I went down the hall and turned right into our laundry room and scooped up 2 servings of dog food out of a red bin. Zeek and Malachi ate their food while I watched "My Strange Addiction". That show is so weird on so many levels.
"Hey is there any of that cereal left?" Liam asked as he hovered over me.
"Yeah, it's on top of the fridge." I gestured him toward the kitchen and finished the last of my breakfast. I tossed my bowl and spoon into the sink and creaked open the door to my room. Triston was staring at the ceiling then peered at me.
"Hi." He whispered.
"Hi. If you're still tired, you can go back to sleep." I said.
"What time is it?" His eyes blinked heavily.
"9:15." I told him.
"Oh," he murmured. "I'll come downstairs." Triston stood up and snatched up his baby blue blanket and stuffed dog then strolled down the stairs, step by step.

That night, it was probably 1:30, I was hungry so I went to go get some Pringles out of the cabinet. I gingerly stepped out of my room and down the stairs. Something caught my eye and I came to an abrupt halt. A brunette teenage girl sat on our couch in the living room with a blue tank top and black leggings on.
"Um," I stuttered. "can I, um, help you?" She flipped her hair over her shoulder and looked at me.
"No, I'm a friend of someone you know, so I'm here." She smirked and turned around. I already don't like her.
"Well, who is that someo-" Liam came into the room with no shirt on, just some sweatpants from Hollister. He was carrying a bag of Fritos. He dropped them and glared at me.
"Emily, please leave. Now." He pointed at the stairs.
"Who is this?" I began to get frustrated.
"A friend, now leave." Liam's face started to blossom into a shade of red.
"No. Who is she and why is she here at one in the morning?" I asked and set a hand in my hip.
"Get out," he commanded. "and don't tell mom."
I sprinted up to my room and slammed the door shut. I cried for 10 minutes, then thought I could spy on them. I was really tired, so I went into Liam's room and got his Sony video camera. I set it on the bookshelf at the end of the banister and hit the red button. A slight bell noise came out of it as it began to record and I climbed up to my room and went to bed. I felt a pump of gilt slide down my throat. I'm just curious, oh well.

I managed to get the camera off of the shelf before anyone woke up. I got its charger and plugged it into my iMac. I loaded the video onto my computer and clicked play.
First, Liam turned on Ace Ventura. Then he plopped onto the couch and looped his arm around the brunette. Later on, they kissed, but the girl left right after that. It was strange.
I unplugged the video camera and shoved it into my chevron striped pillow case then went downstairs. Liam was finishing the movie, all alone.
"Hey..." I mumbled.
"Emily I just wanna say-" I cut him off.
"I'm sorry for interrupting. I just wanted some Pringles. I should've left."
"It's okay. I was being a jerk. You see, it was a dare from my friends to have a girl come over and watch a movie. We didn't do anything, I promise." Liam marked an X over his chest with his index finger.
"Oh, I believe you. She seemed rude, to be honest." I replied.
"She is." Liam laughed as he cracked a grin.

︎Cam and I went out to Steak 'n Shake that night. He brought me a little stuffed animal panda with a box of chocolates.
"I didn't even think of getting you something... I'm so sorry ︎Cam." I hung my head in shame.
"It's fine. It was a surprise, silly." He smirked.
To return the favor, the next day I drive to the mall and bought him a t-shirt from Pacsun that says, "Vans off the Wall" in a floral print with a white background. My car screeched down his road and I left it on his door knob in the bag. I darted back to the car and went straight home.
After a short ride back, I waddled into the kitchen then up to my room. I heard a smooching sound (which I found highly disturbing) and quietly slipped out into the hall. Drew Dallas and my mom were kissing. A flood of happiness drifted through my body like a river. Im so glad my mom loves someone again. I miss my dad. A lot.
