Dad

I can't even put my feelings into words. My mom was in love. My mom was happy for the first time in a long time. I bet dad is happy for her.
I went to school on Monday (the worst day of the week) and the knob on my locker was covered in chewed, pink bubble gum.
"Really?" I mumbled. I felt someone wrap their arms around my waist from behind and set their chin on my head.
"Hey beautiful." ︎Cam smiled then kissed my cheek.
"Hey," I replied in a moody tone. "someone thought it was funny to put gum all over my locker knob."
"I can go get the janitor if you want me to." Cameron offered politely.
"Please." I smiled. He darted down the hall and returned with Mr. Clark, our after-school janitor. He held a roll of paper towel with blue dots engraved on every sheet of towel. In Mr. Clark's left hand, there was a spray bottle of blue windex.
His knees popped as he knelt down and sprayed the blue liquid every where.
"Don't worry - I've done this before." The elder man chuckled and returned to work. The bell rang and I thanked Mr. Clark as he continued the cleaning process.

After 7th hour, ︎Cam and I held hands all the way to our lockers. The janitor had gotten every last piece of sticky gum off of that lock.

After school, I drove to Triston's preschool and picked him up.
"Look at what I drew, Emmy!" He jumped up and down feverishly as he shoved a piece of paper in my face.
"Give me it, silly." I giggled and scanned my eyes over the art.
"It's the wolves. In our backyard." Triston pointed out. He poked two little spots on the sheet and said, "There's Malachi and Zeek. They escaped the wolves."
"Um, this is cool!" I tossed a fake smile on my face and led him out to the car.
When we got home, there was a somewhat torn Target bag on my bedroom door handle. I closed my door and plopped down on my bed. There was a letter taped on the plastic sack. I tore it open and slipped out a thank you card. There was a picture of the ocean on the front, it was beautiful. On the inside, it said:

"Thanks for the shirt, Em. It's wonderful. I'll wear it on Friday. Wanna go get some Starbucks on Wednesday? Let me know! Love you,
Cam"

I grinned and the tornadoes in my stomach went on a rampage as I reached for the tiny gift inside the bag. I pulled out a new beanie. To be specific, it's from American Eagle Outfitters, my favorite brand. Why is it in a Target bag? Oh well.

When Wednesday rolled around, ︎I was getting ready for my date with ︎Cameron Dallas. I decided to put a mild amount of effort into my appearance for him. I did a kind of natural look for make up, but winged out the eyeliner a little bit. I completely straightened out my hair, which now touches the top of my butt, then carefully pulled on the white beanie ︎Cam gave me. For my shirt, I wore a mint green AEO (American Eagle Outfitters) sweatshirt with a huge eagle on the front that was filled with splats of pink and purple. Then a pair of plain white jeans and my mint green Vans.

When ︎Cam crept into our driveway, he rolled down the window, whistled and stared over the brim of his sunglasses. I blushed then climbed into the car.
When we got to Starbucks, I ordered my usual Tall Vanilla Bean Frap, while Cameron got the Cotton Candy Frap. As we slurped our drinks down, out of no where, ︎Cam asked me a very sensitive question.
"Emily- you don't have to answer this if you don't want to- but what exactly, um, happened to your dad?"
My heart dropped into my stomach. Water brimmed my eyes.
"Well, my dad was an architect. He was on his way to work, and in order to get to the building he works at, he has no choice but to take the highway. There was an erratic driver, swerving all over the place. My father was dialing 9-1-1 to report the vehicle, when the swerving car slammed on their brakes. My dad was going 70 mph, and he just... Crashed." I wiped my eyes. "Sorry. It's not something I ever talk about to other people." I claimed. ︎Cam sat by my side and held me close.
"It's okay." He told me. "I'm not even sure what happened to my mom." ︎Cam whispered.

I came home to a peaceful environment in which I watched Toddlers and Tiaras. These parents basically put their kids beauty pageants and waste thousands of dollars on dresses and makeup. It's funny and awful.
I went upstairs and Triston was asleep on Liam's futon in his bedroom. I decided to go to bed.
•••
Sometimes I wonder what my dad was really like. I can't remember much since I
was only 6, but I bet he was a great man.

Reminder: I know that ︎Cam actually grew up with his mom, but I decided to make it his dad in this story!
