The night after our family meeting, we all packed frantically. Liam crammed his clothes into his gray Adidas gym bag, then loaded up Triston's bag. I packed some cute outfits for cold weather, my hair supplies, and some makeup. "Emily!" My mom shouted from her room.
"Yeah?" I hollered.
"Can you get us all our snow pants, jackets, hats, boots, and gloves from the attic?"
"Okay!" I slumped into the garage, then up a flight of steps to the attic, gathering every winter thing we owned.
"Everyone pack your swimming stuff! There's a pool!" Mom added.
I managed to squeeze everything in my bag, then haul it downstairs and into the trunk of our car.
•••
After an hour of driving to some airport north of us, we were sprinting to our gate in the building. We met up at the security gates with Cameron and Drew. Everyone slipped off their shoes and tossed them onto the conveyer belt. One at a time, we stumbled through the threshold. The machine we walk through has metal detectors so you can't carry in guns or explosives.
After we all shoved our feet back into our shoes, we boarded the plane. Mom and Drew sat together, in front of ︎Cam and me. Liam and Triston were behind us. Before the plane flew off, flight attendants stood in every direction, explaining and demonstrating what to do incase of an emergency.
Soon enough, the clouds were beneath the plane, and everyone relaxed. I glanced around, and saw a built-in T.V. in front of me. It said, "Swipe your credit card here for movies." Before my mouth even opened, ︎︎Cam had a credit card in his hand and swiped it through the slot. I fumbled with my earbuds as I unraveled them. The outlet for the headphones were on my armrest. He got one earbud, I got the other.
"What do you want to watch?" He whispered.
"Well, we could watch Parental Guidance, I mean, it's okay." I shrugged.
"Works for me." He smiled and looped an arm around my shoulders and pulled me close.
•••
When we landed, Triston reached over Cameron and jabbed my leg with his finger.
"Emily we have to go to another plane." He spoke softly.
"Okay bud. Sit down if the plane is still moving." I told him. Triston tossed himself back on his seat as I kissed Cam's cheek and whispered in his ear, "Time to get up, we have to go to another plane." ︎Cam rubbed his eyes and stretched out his arms and legs.
•••
We repeated the same process, going through the security gate, then watching a movie, then exiting the flying machine. Except when we landed, the ground was coated with fluffy, white piles of snow. ︎Cam, Liam, Triston and I gazed in awe. Even though there were a few patches of muddy grass, piles of powder rimmed the road and stacked 3 inches high off of the ground. I scooped some up into the palm of my hand and focused on the clump, trying to identify snowflake shapes. I hear footsteps behind me, then Liam shoves my hand full of snow up into my face.
"Liam!" I gaped. I sprinted after him with a fresh chunk of snow in my fingertips. I chuck the small snowball and hit him in the back.
"Wait until we go skiing for that." My mother hissed.
•••
We all arrived to our hotel, Hampton Inn, and wheeled in our luggage.
"What rooms are we all in?" I asked as I flicked my hair off of my neck.
"You and Triston are in 326, Cameron and Liam are in 327, and Drew and I are in 319." She replied as she slipped off her coat.
We unpacked our suitcases and went out to eat at Steak n' Shake.
•••
When we settled into to go to sleep, I inhaled the thick air, then sighed.
"Em," Liam spoke in a hushed tone. "︎Cam wants you to go chill and watch a movie with him in our room. I'll stay in here with Triston."
A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. "You're the best." I slip into Cameron's room and twist the silver doorknob silently as I shut the door.
"Hey," I say. "what movie are we going to watch?" I tilt my head and brush my hair out of my face.
"Well, it's up to you, although I've got a few that I'd like to see." Cameron shrugged his shoulders casually and plopped down in the mattress. "C'mon." He patted beside him. I rolled onto the bed and rearranged the pillows as I leaned forward.
"Honestly, I don't know what to watch." I laugh.
"I was thinking The Hunger Games." Cameron replied.
"Sounds good to me." Something lurches in my lower stomach, so I leaned on Cam's chest. I don't remember doing it, though. Cameron rested his chin on my head and twisted my hair gently between his fingers.
•••
When Katniss volunteers as tribute, ︎Cam lightly kisses my neck, then my cheek. I feel my cheeks heating up. I lean over and lightly kiss his soft lips.
"I'm excited to go skiing tomorrow," I blurt.
"Me too, especially since I've only gone once or twice, it might be a challenge." ︎Cam grinned.
"So you like challenges?" I stretch my legs out.
"What's life without a challenge? That's how I look at it." I adore how he looks at the world. Cameron is a courageous teenager, without a doubt.
"I love how you live in your own world, I really do." I stare into his eyes.
"How do you see the world, Emily?"
I bite my lip as I concentrate. I'm not really sure.
"Well, I obviously see the world with problems, but I like to imagine it as a place where people fall for what they aren't. I've got to be the leader and pull everyone out. Kids at my old school started to trip into modern day in 7th grade." I fumble with my fingers, but ︎Cam grazes my hands with his.
"I see your point." He gives me a half smile, a cute, bright smile. "You're the best, I couldn't ask for anything more."
"Well, that's not true because you're the best." I shoot back. He smirks as we start to kiss.
•••
All I remember is resting my head on Cameron's chest as Katniss finds Peeta near a river.
•••
Cameron lightly ran his fingers through my hair to wake me up.
"You have to back to your room," he whispered. "It's almost 3 in the morning."
"Okay." I yawn and shuffle into my room as Liam goes back into his.
•••
"Emmy! Emmy! Emmy!" Triston startled me.
"Triston! We've gone over this! Wake me up quietly, please, you goober." I tell him stiffly, but joking. I tickled Triston's rib cage, changing the mood in our hotel room.
"Let's go get some breakfast," I slip on my Nike slides. "Here." I bend down and scoop up his light-up sketchers. He grasped them and tightened the Velcro that stretches over his toes.
"I'm hungry. Let's go!" Triston claps his hands together as I glance at his feet.
"You're shoes are on backwards, bud." I cackled, and he swapped them around.
I held his hand all the way to the elevator, and let him press the button with the "down" arrow on it. It lit up with a faint "ding" as the doors unfolded.
"Bush the number one button." I demanded. He jams it with his index finger as the elevator sinks.
Once we reach the breakfast area, Triston claims that he wants Froot Loops, so I set a styrofoam bowl under a dispenser and twist the handle. Colorful rings of sugar-coated cereal spill from the plastic jug, piling up into his bowl. I dump some 2% milk on top of the cereal, then lay a spoon in Triston's hand.
"Go sit at that table," I mumble and point towards the left corner of the room. I got some Froot Loops too, because they're pretty good. I also got a banana nut muffin, bacon, and some orange juice. I'm super healthy. Sometimes.
I cautiously set down my bowl and plate on the wobbly table, staring at the television like a hawk. The weather says it will be around 30°F, so it's pretty decent skiing weather. I know I'm going to fall, I'm positive. We finish our breakfast and head back to our bedroom.
