Chapter 12- Rori’s PoV
Recap; “What did Amy say?” He asked a dark expression crossing his face. Oh shit...
“N-nothing!” I started just as the nurse, Crystal, walked in with the phone. She smiled at us before handing me the phone and giving me the directions of use. It took a while to get a hang of but I got there, like I said I can do anything I set my mind to. Crystal made sure I was fine and then left again.
“Rori.” Danny said, the serious look returning to his face. I sighed and huffed but told him what happened anyway. His face went a nasty colour of purple as his anger and emotions built up....oh dear glob!
“If I’d known...” He started his a voice tense and tired squeak.
“But you didn’t!” I said holding onto his hand with both of mine. “It’s over now, don’t worry about it Ok?”
“But, but she had no right!” He stammered, “I would never do that to you Rori! Never!” His eyes pleaded with me to believe him and I did, I truly did.
“I know, Danny, I know.” I whisper to him. “You should go home, get some rest. You can come and see me tomorrow ok? I’m not getting out till the afternoon so you can have a nice lie in.”
He looked conflicted, like he wanted to argue with me. “Fine” He grumbled. He stood and kissed my forehead. “Sleep tight sweetie.” And with that he left.
I smiled a sleepy smile to myself before reaching out for the phone on my bed side table. I dialled the familiar number and waited for the phone to finish ringing.
“Hello? Hey Abbs it’s me.”
*Present time*
“Rori!” My best friend squealed excitedly down the phone, “How was it?” I could hear the enthusiasm running clear through her sweet Scottish tones. It was easy to tell she expected a full run through of what happened, like the one when she went to see her favourite band, One Direction, live in concert. What a surprise she’s going to get!
I took a deep breath and tried to build up every ounce of confidence left inside me. Come on Rori, she’s your best friend not some ogre...well actually she does look a tiny bit like Princess Fiona but that’s beside the point. Just blooming tell her Roars!
“Em...Abbs? I’ve got something to tell you...” I trail of biting my lip slightly.
“Oh my God! You’re pregnant with Danny O’Donoghues love child aren’t you!?!” she said in a fake shocked tone. I had to laugh, it was so Abbey to say something like that. She takes away the edge to horrid situations and makes them light and fluffy like clouds floating on the breeze.
“Nope, unfortunately not. Although I have met him.” The end of the phone line goes silent for a couple of seconds and I think I’ve lost her. That’s until she lets out the biggest loudest scream of joy I’ve ever heard. I hold the phone away from my ear, my lovely best friend isn’t the nicest thing to hear when you wake up in hospital. I swear she causes all my headaches!
“You lucky birch tree!” She screams almost exploding my eardrum for a second time. I smile at our little pun on words as she continues; “How the fuck did you manage that?” She exclaims not half as loudly. And when I say not as half as loud I mean only barely registering on the richter scale this time.
“It’s kinda a long story...” I trail off, knowing I’m about to be ambushed by questions. Fifty minutes later I have finished my whole sorry. It took me that long as Abbey kept asking inappropriate questions like; You know the guy who stole tickets and could’ve possibly raped you? Was he fit? ‘Cause that wouldn’t have been so bad but if he was a minger it would’ve been a hundred times worse. I didn’t even dignify this question with a reply I was so shocked into silence, which isn’t like me when I’m with my Abikins! Normally you need to rugby tackle me to the ground and cover my mouth with duct tape, and I’m still chatting away like a monkey on crack.
“Aww Rori! You poor wee thing!” She exclaimed, you could hear the tears in her voice. It could be said she is a bit of a cry baby. A picture of Niall Horan’s hair could set this girl off like a fountain! But that’s why I love her. That and her hair, but that’s another story...
“Roars, does your dad know?” Abbey asked. Oh my fucking God! Dad! Shit, fuck, shit, fuck! I totally forgot about my dad! I face palm and groan. He’s going to murder me in my sleep when I got home. And that’s the nicest of the scenarios running through my head.
“Abbey...You couldn’t do me the biggest favour ever could you?” I said putting my cutest voice on.
“Oh nu uh! No way, I’m not being your lamb to the slaughter Aurora Lane. Not again anyway!” She says matter-of-factly. I groan again. Then something dawns on me, why’d she say again?
“Hey, what you mean again?” I query, racking every one of my few functioning brain cells for the time before. Even through my lack of grey matter I still can’t find it. This earns me a laugh containing anything but humour from Abbey.
“Let me enlighten you..”
“Rori! That’s not fairs it’s my turn!” Abbey pouted up at me, tears glistening in her big green eyes. It was just a game of pop the pirate but for us it was like the Olympics, but better.
“Tough! You were to slow!” I giggled, sending Abbey into a right little tantrum. This made me giggle harder and Toby, Abbeys big brother joined in. She stomped her little bare feet and screamed loudly at us, baring her wobbly five year old teeth in what was meant to be a menacing look.
“I HATE YOU WORWEE!” She yelled at me, before knocking over the game and running from the room. Worwee was her name for me as she couldn’t pronounce Rori properly. I didn’t care though as I was just as young and immature.
Me and Toby laughed some more. Toby was my first crush and partner in crime at that age. It was fair to say that even Scooby Doo wasn’t as funny or as amazing as Jugs (named affectionately after the big fat ugly Toby Jugs- told you I loved him!) I practically loved the evil glint in his eye and the secret smile he saved just for me. I don’t love him anymore but I still have butterflies sometimes when I think of him. You never forget your first love...
Anyway on that day that mischievous glint was in his eyes. I wanted to know what he was thinking straight away. Scrap that I needed to know!
“Well the plan is-..” He whispered the top secret plan in my ear and we set it all up.
Carefully we creeped out into the harsh winter weather and walked over to the shed. We couldn’t open the door from outside as it was locked and the latch is on the inside. Being the rookie and smallest of the two of us, I was always the one who was sent into the most tricky, compromising places. Today was no different. Carefully and Toby gave me a leg up into the open window of the rickety wooden shed and I was sent to look for the old, dusty cricket bat. Once I found it, I flicked the latch and snuck back into the house and up the stairs onto the landing, where Jugs was waiting for me.
With the stealth of ninja squirrels we snuck up to the big glass vase outside Abbeys room. Toby beckon for me to stand back and swung the bat and shattered the vase. He then placed the bat next to Abbeys door before we legged it into Toby’s room and started innocently playing a game of kids monopoly. Not long after the yelling started. Let’s just say Abbey’s mum wasn’t too happy with her usually angelic daughter. The whole way through the row Toby and I stifled giggles.
*present time*
“Oh that...That was Jugs idea! I was just a pawn in his game of chess!” I reassured my friend. Abbs tutted in my ear as if to say ‘Uh huh yeah right!’ I sighed in defeat knowing that because of the mammoth grudge there was no way Abbey would help me out. I yawned loudly suddenly realising how tired I really was.
“Go to sleep Rolo, I’ll talk to your dad for you. And I’m coming to see you tomorrow, I miss you and I’m bringing chocolates! See tomorrow bub.” Abbey said hanging up before I could say goodbye. I switch off the phone and let the release that is sleep wrap me in its embrace...
