"i'm leaving tomorrow, whether you like it or not, maria," you said, shoving the last of the supplies into your bag.

"you'll be dead before you even get out of wyoming," the older woman shot back, bracing her hands on the wooden dining table. her brows were furrowed in frustration.

"i don't care," you snapped. "if it was me, joel and ellie would be halfway across the country by now." you grabbed your pistol from the kitchen counter, shoving it into the waistband of your jeans.

maria stood up straight. "i'm not letting you go. your parents won't approve."

"they don't even need to know," you hissed. "i'm an adult now, my parents, and you, don't get to make the rules for me anymore. if i'm marching to my death then so be it."

scoffing, the blonde placed her hands on her hips. "and i assume jesse will be joining you?"

"i don't care if he does or doesn't, you still aren't stopping me. i'm gonna kill every single one of those motherfuckers for what they did," you seethed, voice rising as you glared at maria, already done with this conversation.

maria shook her head as she stepped around the table. "you need help. you're so consumed by everything happening in your head that you can't see right in front of you."

"i don't need anyone's help," you muttered, rolling your eyes and turning back to your bag.

"if ellie was here, and not six feet in the ground, you'd let her help you," maria said.

you stilled, slowly turning to look at maria. "don't ever talk about my fucking girlfriend like that. and, even if she was here...she would be backing me up, and we'd still be leaving tomorrow for what they did to joel."

cursing under her breath, maria headed to the door. she grabbed the handle and swung it open, coming to a halt at who was on the other side.

"jesse," you heard maria acknowledge.

making your way toward the door, you saw your friend standing on the front porch in the cold, his backpack already slung on a shoulder.

ignoring her, he looked at you. "you ready?"

"yeah," you nodded, watching as maria stepped around jesse and out of joel's house. shutting the door behind him, jesse sighed.

he sat down at one of the pulled out chairs, rubbing a hand over his face. "are we really doing this?"

"is that your way of asking to back out?" you asked, shooting him a look as you took a seat. "because if you are, then do it now. i don't want your company for only half a trip."

"no, no," jesse said, putting his hands up in defense. "i'm not backing out."

giving him a dip of your chin, you sunk into your chair. "good," you breathed, shutting your eyes for a brief moment. as an unsettling silence clouded the dining room, you couldn't help but mutter, "i wish they were still here."

"yeah," jesse said, "me too."

opening your eyes and sitting up, you stared at the backpack waiting for you at the end of the kitchen counter. "i wasn't ready to say goodbye."

the quiet continued on, but after a minute of trying to hold yourself together, you cleared your throat and stood. "we're wasting our time," you said. "let's go get shimmer and head out before dawn breaks. i want those fuckers dead as soon as possible."
