Being in love with Ellie was amazing. You wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. You would give anything to keep the roaring fire that was your love going - to make it burn forever. And nothing hurt more than to see that fire - the thing that resembled the mutual feeling of love for one another - die out. To see it reduced to ashes.
"I can't keep pretending, y/n. Not anymore," Ellie said, her voice laced with agitation.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" You whispered back, tears beginning to swell at the gut-wrenching feeling of fighting with someone who had such a big impact in your life.
"That I love you. I can't keep lying to you or myself. I don't feel anything for you anymore. And I'm sorry," Ellie informed, the words seeming like a punch to the gut.
Your eyes widened slightly at her statement. You didn't know why you were so shocked, you had seen this moment flash across your eyes every time you had a nightmare - Ellie leaving you for Dina. You just didn't think that Ellie had it in her heart to leave you. But man, you were wrong.
Tears began to slip from your eyes as you blinked back more, trying not to lose it in front of her. But she knew. Ellie knew that you probably wouldn't handle this well. She didn't care though. She just couldn't keep producing fake smiles your way, not when someone else made her feel the true symptoms of love. Feelings that she used to get with you.
You brought your hand up and wiped your cheeks, trying to keep it together as you faced the situation at hand. "I know. I've known since last month. Since you blew off our anniversary."
She sucked in a breath. Images of the fight you two had last month flashed in her mind. Even Ellie had to admit that she never wanted to experience something like that ever again.
"Just promise me one thing." You whispered, not taking your eyes off the ground.
Ellie stayed silent.
"That she makes you happy. That you at least feel something. All I want is for you to be happy. Ellie. That's it. And if Dina gives you that joy, then I am content." You said, finally peeling your eyes from the wooden floor and meeting hers.
She gave you a curt nod.
"Good. Because the first time I saw you two together, I knew I never stood a chance. I felt that I was temporary - that we were temporary. But you and Dina...y'all are meant to last." A small, pitiful smile graced your lips. "I knew that I was never the only one that loved you."
With that last sentence, you turned and walked to Ellie's door.
You turned the handle, opening the door and taking a step out onto her front porch before looking over your shoulder. "Goodbye, Ellie."
