note: i have no idea how to write injuries😐 i mean, i'm a writer not a doctor, sorry

The knife skids across the floor, falling from the runner's skull as it's body collapses on the ground, non-moving.

"Fuck," You mutter, pain growing in your abdomen as you try to remain calm, taking deep, steady breaths. "This was not how today was supposed to go."

Grinding your teeth, you yank yourself away from the wall, the jagged piece of metal ripping from your abdomen, making a strangled yelp come from your throat. I have to get back to Jackson.

Dropping to your knees, you struggled to unzip your backpack, frantically searching for the first aid kit you were required to take with you on patrol. You sighed when you caught sight of the red and white container, silently thanking Maria for being so demanding and pushy when it came to the subject of injuries.

As you promptly opened up the bin, you decided just a layer of bandage would hold you over till you made it back to Jackson, which, to be honest, you weren't sure how or when you were going to get back to the safety of the town. Tearing off a long strip of bandage, you shrugged off your jacket, shivering at the cold as you lifted your shirt, holding the end between your teeth, and quickly swathed your torso in the white fabric.

Ignoring the pain that seared in your top half, you let your shirt fall pack in place before putting your coat back on. Disregarding the agony you felt, you got to your feet, knees shaking under you as you stood to your full height, your head buzzing with a newly found migraine. I have to get back to Jackson.

Pulling your backpack on, you took a step forward and ultimately cursed at yourself before your legs gave out, blackness blurring your vision as your head made contact with the wooden floor, knocking you unconscious.

"Hey! y/n - oh my God," Ellie said, her face dropping at the sight of your body on the ground. Scrambling to your side, she let out a string of curses, praying to God that you were alive and that the blood pooling around you wasn't yours. She shook your shoulders, repeating your name like a mantra. "Come on, don't die on me now."

"Ellie?" You had managed to get out as you recognized the wide, green eyes boring into your body. "What...what are you doing here? What happened?"

"You're asking me what happened? y/n, you're the one on the floor surrounded by blood," Ellie said as she turned you on your back, sucking in a breath at the bandage peeking from your shirt. So it is your blood.

"I...I got pushed into that hunk of metal," You told her, weakly pointing to the silver object that had dried blood on it. Ellie frowned deeply.

"We need to take off your shirt," Ellie said, busing herself with looking through her bag, her nose, and cheeks a light shade of pink. You assumed it was from the cold wind sweeping through the broken windows.

You nodded at her instruction, using her arm to pull yourself into a sitting position, hissing as pain shot up your body, black once again stealing the corners of your vision. With help from Ellie, you managed to rid yourself of your backpack and jacket, leaving you in your worn t-shirt and jeans. Avoiding eye contact with you, Ellie told you to lift your hands, pulling your shirt over your arms and laying it on top of your jacket.

You smiled a little when you noticed how strongly Ellie focused on looking anywhere but at the swell of your breasts in your sports bra, keeping her eyes on your injury and your injury only.

Your smile faltered though when Ellie began to clean it, making you groan, grasping her wrist as she went, who didn't want this to take any longer than it had to. Especially because she had to get you back to the safety of Jackson.

Ellie wasted no time in cleaning and rebandaging the wound, muttering soft apologies whenever you groaned in pain. Thankfully, it took her merely 30 minutes to tend to the wound. "Alright. All done."

Nodding your head, you let her help you get your clothes back on, as well as your bag, thanking her again for her aid.

"It's nothing. I know you would do the same for me," She whispered as she gave you a soft smile before cleaning up everything and putting the first aid kit back in her bag. "Now, let's get home. Maria told me there would be a snowstorm soon, so we have to hurry. Where's Key? I didn't see her when I entered the house."

Shanking your head, you told her, "Infected got to her. A huge hoard practically jumped me, and we raced here. I had to leave her out in the snow."

Ellie dipped her head in acknowledgment. "Ok, we can both take Shimmer. We need to hurry, the temperature's dropping fast."

You didn't argue as Ellie helped you up, keeping an arm around to hold you steady as you both walked out of the house, stopping every few seconds to make sure no infected lurked nearby. As the two of you made it out, you sighed with relief. One step closer to home, you told yourself.

Shimmer waited in the distance, her tail swaying in the strong wind that blew around you.

"Almost there," Ellie mumbled, readjusting her arm as she spoke. "When we get back, you owe me a movie night."

You snorted, letting Ellie help you into Shimmer's saddle. "Sure thing. I could use some down time."

Ellie smiled as she lifted herself off the snowy ground, sitting behind you. Grabbing the reins, her body leaned against yours, and only then did you realize just how close the two of you were. With her chest against your back, and her mouth almost pressed entirely to your ear, you forgot about the dull aching in your stomach, which you found was replaced by fluttering butterflies instead. Deciding that things could literally not get any worse than they already had, you leaned back, pressing yourself against the heat that radiated off her, sighing through your nose as Shimmer took off in a trot.

Tensing at your sudden action, Ellie soon let herself relax as she steered Shimmer away from the house, looking forward to where tonight would take your relationship.
