Sophia's POV

"Gerald" I call, but he doesn't even act like a human being is talking to him.

"Gerald please talk to me. I'm begging you"

"Why did you do that back there?" He finally asks

"Do what?" I ask

"You shouldn't have owned up to it. Besides I was the one whose face was showing clearly, not yours."

"So you wanted me to deny you?" I ask in shock.

"Yes! That way it would have been better, your mother had so much trust in you. You could have easily said it wasn't you and free yourself"

"Then what would have happened to you?"

"They were still going to fire me anyways, not like teaching is the only thing I do for a living" he replies.

"So I was wrong for owning up to it? I couldn't deny you because I love you!" I tell him

"Sophia please stop it! This is over  We have nothing to do with each other anymore." he says harshly.

"We have nothing to do with each other? Gerald–"

"From now on, It's Mr Gerald for you"

My heart sinks.

"No" I shake my head in denial. "Don't do this. I love you. Please" I sob.

"God! Sophia please just let me be. I don't want you getting into anymore trouble because of me. I have already issued my letter of resignation to the school."

"Why'd you resign?" I ask.

"I always wanted to, but I didn't because I wanted more time with you, but it's high time I left."

"Don't do this. Just because you lost your job, doesn't mean you've lost me too"

"I never had you, did I? If I did, you wouldn't have kissed that guy at that stupid party you attended. We are over Sophia. Thanks for the good times we shared, now please, let me go." he says, before slamming  the door on my face.

"Ge—rald" I hit the door, but he doesn't open it.

"Sophie!" I turn to meet the  approaching figures of my friends.

"Sophia what happened?" Kharo asks.

"Shh...it's okay" Juanita say, pulling me in for a hug.

"It's not okay!" I whimper.

"So? Are you ready to talk about it yet?" Juanita asks.

I stay quiet for some minutes before replying.

"He resigned, before the school could fire him. My dad made it look like he was taking advantage of me" I disclose. "My mother is so disappointed and angry at me...it feels like I'm adding to her problems."

"That's not true" Kharo says.

"I understand how you feel, but please don't let it get the best of you" Juanita says. "Your mother probably just needs some time, she'll come back around" she says, reassuringly and I nod, hoping it's true.

Juanita's POV

"So how's your friend, Sophia?" Her voice stops me in my tracks.
I slowly turn to face her, after closing the fridge.

"What?"

"Don't you understand English anymore? How is your best friend, Sophia?"

"She's....." I narrow my eyes at her. "Why do you even care"
