BARNEY'S POV:
it's 11:00 New Year's Eve and we're all at maclaren's waiting an hour for New Years, I was gonna propose to Ted right as the clock strikes midnight, but I remembered something ted mentioned before, he said that his dad was old fashioned and wanted to give his blessing to whoever he marries,
"Shit" I sighed out
The gang looked at me weird
"What's wrong babe?" Ted asked giving me a concerned look
"I gotta go, I'll be back by midnight, I promise" I said
"Why? Where are you going?" Ted asked
"To do something so important" I explained
I got up and started walking out of maclaren's and Marshall followed me
"Dude where are you going?" He asked
"Ok i'll tell you but you have to promise not to tell ted" I said
"Oh no, please don't tell me your gonna cheat on him" he said worriedly
"What? No, I would never cheat on ted" I said
"Ok I promise not to tell Ted" Marshall said
"Well tonight I'm gonna propose-" Marshall cut me off with a squeal
"And I have to go ask his dad for permission, I know it's important to Ted and his dad so I'm gonna do it" I explained
"Ohhh, but isn't that only for the girl?" Marshall asked
"Well out of me and Ted he's the girly one" I said straightening my tie
"Good luck buddy" Marshall said patting my back
I got in a taxi and rode to Teds dads house
when I got there I rang the doorbell and nobody came to the door, I started to worry maybe he wasn't home, but I rang the doorbell again, and someone came and opened the door.
I only met Teds dad once a long time ago so he was hardly recognizable, he came to the door and rubbing his eyes
"Barney?, what are you doing here?" Mr.Mosby asked
I was surprised he even remembered me, and he was getting old.
"Can I come in?" I ask trying to be extra polite
"Fine" he said
"What do you need?" He said in a grumpy voice
"Uhh" I stuttered
"Uh happy new year!" I said
Then I shook my head
"I uh came here to ask you a question" I said
"I want to know if I can marry your son?" I said more like a question
Mr.Mosby gave me a mean stare
"No, my sons not gonna marry you" he said angrily
"uh why cause I'm a guy?" I asked
"It has nothing to do with the fact that your a guy" he said shaking his head
"What is it then?" I asked getting a bit mad
"First off, you're probably just using my son for sex or some girl you want to bang likes gay men, it's not because you love my son" he explained
"I know that all does sound like me, but I promise, I really love Ted, so much I'm actually gonna marry him, commit forever, no other women, Ted it special to me, I swear, I'm not using him for anything" I said
"My son told me all you do just to try to get in women's pants, and you would get married just to do that, I bet my son loves you and believes you love him back, but you're lying, I know it" he said
I sighed and looked to the time the clock read 11:40
"Please, you have to believe me I love ted, believe it or not I'm the one who wanted to come out to our friends, and I suggested waiting for sex, me Barney Stinson, waiting for sex, I'd do anything for your son, and I will always love him, he's not just the love of my life, he's my best friend" I said defending myself
Mr. Mosby sat down and had a thinking face on, he picked up his phone and dialed a number
*phone call*
"hi Ted, happy new year"
"Hi dad, happy new year to you too."
"Ted, are you dating anyone? I have someone to set you up with"
"Actually I've been needing to tell you, I think I'm dating my soulmate, you'll never guess who, I'm dating Barney, and I really really love him, I'm thinking about proposing soon"
"That's awesome son, have a good new year"
"you too dad bye"
*phone call over*
"You have my blessing" Mr. Mosby said shaking my hand
"Welcome to the family" he said
"Thank you so much" I said hugging him
I looked at the time, 11:50
"I have to get going, I promised the gang I'd be back by midnight" I said
"Bye, son!" Mr. Mosby said with a laugh
"Bye dad!" I said making the joke back
I hailed a cab and quickly told the cab driver the address to maclaren's, we started to drive but there was traffic. Bad traffic.
"Son of a bitch" I sighed
I started to think of what a good year this was, finding love, real love, with someone I never expected, I though back to good times me and Ted had, I smiled big, I thought of all the crappy years I've had, and all the crappy people I've dated or banged, all the crappy New Years regretting what happened that year, i smiled thinking how I could be satisfied with how this year turned out.
I checked the time, 11:55
I took some money out of my wallet, gave it to the cab driver and got out deciding i would get there faster if I just ran there
I ran for 2 minutes and stopped to breath heavily, I continued to run and I finally got there at 11:59
I ran to our booth still panting, I reached into my pocket and just as the clock turned to 12:00 I got down on one knew and pulled out my ring
"Ted Evelyn Mosby, will you spend the rest of your days seeing how awesome I am?" I asked
Ted smiled so big
"Yes!" Ted said his eyes full of tears he was trying to hid
I slipped the ring on teds hand and smiled
12:01 we have our New Years kiss
"awhhh" lily, robin, and marshall all said in unison
And that was the best New Years I've ever had.
