On that same night Luna woke up with her phone ringing loudly on her side table, with eyes still closed, she wandered her hands to where her phone was. Answering the call without even looking at the caller ID.
"What the hell do you want? " she answered sleepily. Peeking at the clock on her bedside table and saw that it was five minutes before midnight. Luna came home from Sheldon a little before nine since she helped with cleaning the grounds together with the council and Athena, ditching her dinner, and went straight to bed only to be waked up by a phone call.
"Luna," hearing that voice completely woke her senses up. Her eyes widened in recognition as she looked at the caller ID. Mentally cursed herself for answering the phone like that. Because the person on the other line was the same guy who's been running around her head all day.
"Hey, dumbass," Luna could barely stopped the strong urge to see him, the desperation and the worry that she was dealing with all day was threatening come out into the surface. Long gone were her anger for Toby ditching them and not calling them to assured them that he was okay, all she wanted now was to hear his lovely voice and tell him that she misses him so bad that it was driving her crazy.
"Hey, Loser," Funny how his remarks could calm the raging storm in her head, wondering if the boy was even aware on how he can turn her into a love sick puppy with just a single word.
"I'm surprised you know how to dial my number and called, so to what do owe the honor of this call for?" it's not like Toby to call someone in the middle of the night, the last time he did that was during April fools telling her that his pet died that made her cry only to found out that Toby doesn't have any pet. The boy can be quite cruel at times.
"I'm at the park," he replied shortly which made her knitted her brows in confusion.
"You do realize that it's the middle of the night right? What the hell are you doing there?" she asked worriedly, her bed long forgotten as she slipped out of her pajamas and changed into Toby's hoody jacket and a pair of leggings. There's no way in hell that she will leave Toby alone in the middle of the park at midnight! Oakwood may be a safe place to live but no one can tell what will happen to Toby if she left him alone there. For heaven's sake, the boy can't even defend himself physically.
"Toby?" Luna descended the stairs as quietly as possible with her phone pressing on her ears, hoping that Caleb and her mother wouldn't wake up and see her attempt to sneak out.
"Don't come," he said, almost like a whisper that she's not even sure if she heard it right or not. But his voice seems more like a silent plea for help, for some reason she understands Toby more than anyone. His words have a different meaning to her and maybe she's just reading too much into his words but she knew that at that very moment, he wanted her to come and find him. And so she did, as she grabbed the keys and slipped out of their house at midnight.
The cold air greeted her as soon as she stepped out of the house, running straight to Stella and quickly occupying the driver seat. Checking the lights on her brother's window, Luna drove away. Caleb will definitely wring her neck if he finds out about her little escapade, but for now, nothing matters more than the boy who was waiting on her in the darkness of the night.
"You're not a very good liar Cooper," The sound of his breathing through the phone was the only sound inside the car, her heart beating faster inside her chest wondering if Toby's alright or not. Because Toby's not the kind of person who will call someone at midnight for nothing.
Luna reached the park near her house in a few minutes, the park was a ten minute walked from her house after all. Toby likes the old playground hiding in that particular spot that the two of them discovered back in sophomore year. Taking a deep breath, she slipped out of her car, with her phone on her ear and eyes already roaming around for the familiar sight of her favorite jet black hair and pair of warm blue eyes. Luna knew where to find him, maybe it was her years spent chasing him endlessly or the fact that she was too obsess with him that her mind constantly looks for him, everything about Toby came naturally as breathing. He was a magnetic force that drawn her effortlessly into his axis.
Her body was moving on it's own to the familiar path that will lead her straight to him. An abandoned slides was hiding behind a big chunk of cut off tree that once used to stand tall in that spot, and there he was, lying on the cold rusting metal with his eyes closed, his glasses slipping on the bridge of his nose and the sight of him making her smile in an instant.
"I came," she said through the phone and ended the call. Luna watched him open his eyes slowly with a faint smile in his lips, the boy looked pale as ghost as he stared at her. Toby must be cold, the thought of him waiting in the park for god knows how long make her heart ache wondering what made him do such reckless thing when he just went out of the hospital earlier that day.
"You came," Toby's word echoed into the stillness of the night, his eyes looking at her like she was a pigment of his imagination as she walked towards him, crossing the distance in a heartbeat as she wrapped him safely in her arms. Toby was cold as ice when her body collided with him, tightening her grip on him hoping that the warmth of her embrace could melt the coldness away.
"I'll always come for you idiot," she smiled at him, as her hands made its way to his face, the coldness of his skin almost made her flinched but she didn't, not when Toby seems to be enjoying the warmth of her hands on his face as he closed his eyes and leaned into her warm hands.
"You're cold as ice, how long have you been here?"
"An hour? I don't know," his answer made her frowned, but Toby just smiled faintly at her as he went back to his position earlier. Luna found her place next to him, as they both looked at the starless sky above them.
"It's a shame, not having you around for the bonfire,"
"Yeah," Toby did not say another word after that, though Luna did not really mind the silence between them, she knew that something was wrong for him to do such a spontaneous trip to their neighborhood.
"Everything okay Cooper?" Luna contemplated in questioning him more, but knowing Toby and his aloofness, she was scared that he would run away before she gives him an answer.
"It will be Miss Greene,"
"What do you mean?" she asked again but Toby didn't answer. The silence was killing her but she's not giving up, before she could speak again, Toby cut her off.
"Do you remember the story of the Little Prince?" he asked.
"Of course, 11th-grade literature how can I forget?"
"The shame of it was, that they loved each other, but they were too young to know how to love," he quoted that made her smile instantly. Toby and his quoting skills never ceased to amaze her.
"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important," she replied that made Toby grinned at her. It was her favorite quote from the Little Prince, and probably the only part that stuck into her head.
"We're so dorky Cooper," she said that made both of them laughed. It was probably one of the night that Luna will remember for a really long time, just her and Toby on an old, cold and abandoned slide at the park, a few minutes away from her house, the cold wind caressing their skin, their laughter echoing through the silent night, her heart beating for him, and on that moment, she knew that she's completely, madly and absolutely in love with a boy named Tobias Cooper.
