Chapter 5

Win

It almost scared me when I saw Devon walk over to my brother when he finally came out of the house, but to my relief, Shane didn't say anything. If anything, he seemed to be enjoying the conversation.

It's not that I don't want Shane to know. I just didn't want to get caught red-handed making out with Dez's brother. After everything Shane's done for this family, I wouldn't want him to be ashamed of having his sister labeled as an easy girl at his friend's house.

Our dad passed away when I was just a kid, I don't remember much of him I just remember our mom always working. She worked for us to have everything we wanted. Shane got into music and she paid for guitar lessons, which in turn made me want to learn how to sing and I went online and self-taught myself how to sing. But, ever since he made it big and gets a nice paycheck, she only takes a part-time city job for her spending and Shane pays for everything else as a reward for all her hard work. The thought of him doing that warms my heart every time.

If things were serious with Devon, then I wouldn't care to tell him. But, we acted on feeling more than anything else. Aside from him occasionally stopping by the studio the last couple of weeks after the bonfire, I've only talked to him on a one-on-one conversation that day of the bonfire.

I was a little disappointed when he didn't call all weekend and I convinced myself that guys are just programmed to be this way. They're programmed to not care about anyone else, but themselves.

I stopped thinking that as soon as I saw him walk up to the studio through the window from my desk. Holding a single red rose, he opens the door and smiles. For the second time, this man, in this room has got me at a loss for words.

He smiles at me when he walks in and I can't seem to form any words or a smile to give him. I thought I'd never experience a man opening a car door for me and now bringing me a rose to work? He must be reading the same romance novels I tend to read or he's a natural romantic.

"Hey." He stands in front of my desk, looking confident as ever, "I got this beautiful rose for a beautiful little girl."

That brought me back and I clear my throat as I take the rose from him and smell it, "I'm not a little girl, Devon." I glare up at him and he's smiling in a way that has my heart beating rapidly.

"Trust me, Win. I know." He meets my eyes and I feel my face flush.

I touch the soft petals of the rose and smirk, "I thought I told you to call me. Do you not know how to use your phone?"

Smirking, he's about to say something, but Dez and Jo walk in, interrupting him. Dez eyes him curiously, "I thought you'd stop by tomorrow? Is dad okay? Did anything happen to him this weekend?"

Clearing his throat he shifts on his feet and I immediately feel guilty for my comment, "No, he's fine. I was wondering if I can take Win for a quick coffee. I'm actually pretty busy today. I have to get a few permits and have some people look into the houses that were just built."

Dez immediately looks at me wide-eyed, "You want to have coffee with my brother?"

I look over at Devon who looks serious and at the same time almost offended, I meet her eyes and smile weakly, "Well, he brought me this beautiful rose."

Devon chuckles softly, "Look, if you need her then we'll get coffee some other time. I just thought I'd ask since you're her boss."

Jo laughs softly beside her, "Just take the girl for some coffee, Devon. I think me and Dez can manage without her for now."
